Purple Haze is the Stand of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure character Pannacotta Fugo, but what are its abilities? Created by Hirohiko Araki, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a long-running manga and anime series that chronicles the escapades of the Joestar brood – a family that possesses special powers and discover their destiny is to battle any supernatural villains who threaten the world. Each major arc of the manga and each season of the anime is set in a different era and focuses on a different generation of the clan.

Golden Wind is the fifth arc of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga and the fourth season of the show. It’s set in Naples, Italy during the early 2000s and follows Giorno Giovanna, who is the biological son of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures’ first protagonist Jonathan Joestar. Giorno joins a Mafia gang called Passione intending to take it over and better the lives of the people of Naples. Through Passione, Giorno soon meets fellow member Pannacotta Fugo – a teenager disowned by his wealthy family after committing a violent act during his youth who joins Passione hoping the gang will make use of his volatile temper.

Like many characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Pannacotta possesses a Stand – a physical manifestation of a person’s spiritual energy that has supernatural powers and gives users superhuman abilities. Fugo’s Stand is known as Purple Haze and – as rock fans may have guessed – is named after the Jimi Hendrix song of the same name. Purple Haze is of humanoid appearance and like many Stands it has a personality similar to its user, meaning that like Fugo it can be violent and unstable. It’s said to be one of the deadliest Stands, but what abilities does Purple Haze have in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure?

Purple Haze in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Purple Haze has three bulbs on each of its hands that release a deadly, flesh-eating virus when broken. The virus – which appears as a cloud of purple gas – infects any living thing within its range and has the gruesome ability to turn an adult human into a pile of goo in less than a minute. Purple Haze’s killer virus in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is indiscriminate too and will infect enemies and allies alike. As such, Fugo rarely employs Purple Haze’s abilities and when he does it’s usually only as a last resort.

That doesn’t mean Fugo hasn’t used Purple Haze in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, such as when he employed his Stand’s abilities to kill rival Passione member Illuso in Golden Wind. Fugo and Purple Haze amassed an even more impressive body count in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure light novel Purple Haze Feedback, in which the Stand’s deadly abilities claimed the lives of former Passione members Vladimir Kocaqi, Angelica Attanasio and Massimo Volpe.
