Johnny Depp Saddles Up To Ride With Pancho Villa

One upon a time there was a young actor named Johnny. Johnny was an actor who liked to take risks and star in off-beat films. The major studios were wary of Johnny and they liked to play with more popular actors – people like Tom. Then one day Johnny signed on to star in a film based on a Disney theme park ride. The film was a huge success and suddenly Johnny found himself starring in large budget films and accepting huge pay checks.

It now looks like Johnny Depp may have rediscovered his odd-ball roots as the star is now eyeing up a role as Pancho Villa alongside Salma Hayek in Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers.

Is Depp’s casting as the Mexican revolutionary and the title not strange enough for you? How about the fact the film will be filmed in Spanish?

Emir Kusturica – who directed Depp in 1993’s Arizona Dream (a film I’m sure that I saw, but can’t remember) will direct a script by Gordan Mihic.

According to Variety:

“The script is based on biographical novel The Friends of Pancho Villa,  in which author James Carlos Blake recounts how Villa and his compadres had a great time fighting and robbing the rich, but also dancing, partying and making love."

It sounds like there’s a little something for everyone in there!

Due to Depp’s busy schedule (the man has multiple projects in the pipleine including The Lone Ranger and another Pirates of the Caribbean) the film wont start shooting until 2011.

Between now and then, Kusturica will keep busy by directing Cool Water, a film – get this- “about a Palestinian stripper working in Germany who returns to her homeland to bury her dead father.”

I swear, you couldn’t make it up.

More on Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers and other Johnny Depp films (but probably not Cool Water) when we get it.
