Johnny Depp Confirmed For '21 Jump Street'; Vera Farmiga Joins 'Safe House'

Here's a bit of lovely (in every meaning of the word) casting news for you: Johnny Depp has been confirmed to make a cameo appearance in 21 Jump Street, a cinematic adaptation of the late '80s TV show that served as the launch pad for Depp's acting career.

Meanwhile, Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga (who can currently be seen opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Source Code) has signed on for Safe House, an upcoming thriller that will star the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington, and Robert Patrick (a.k.a. the T-1000 from Terminator 2) - among several others.

Coming Soon confirmed the exclusive news about Depp, whose hectic work schedule was previously seen as a possible obstacle to his making a cameo in the 21 Jump Street movie. Co-writer/star Jonah Hill claims to have written a "really fun" bit for Depp in the film, which also features Channing Tatum as Hill's fellow undercover cop, who scopes out crime in high schools. Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, and Brie Larson will also play important roles in the flick.

Deadline has the scoop on Farmiga, an Oscar-nominated actress best known for her admirable turns in critical (and financial) hits like The Departed and Up in the Air. She'll play Reynolds' boss in Safe House, which stars the latter as a CIA operative forced to escort a cunning criminal (Washington) to safety after an attack occurs on the "safe house" where he is being held.

While the two films in question are shaping up to be quite different from one another, both have potential to be pretty good as well. Safe House boasts a great cast and an intriguing premise that could make for a tense and dramatic thriller; 21 Jump Street might not sound so appealing at first, but previously-released plot/character details and the involvement of directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) suggest it may end up being a surprisingly fun action-comedy.

Safe House is currently in the midst of filming and is scheduled for theatrical release on February 10th, 2012.

21 Jump Street has begun production as well and is slated to hit theaters on March 16th, 2012.
