John Wick TV show spinoff The Continental may be bringing back a familiar face in Ian McShane. The original John Wick seemingly came out of nowhere back in 2014, and on the surface it looked like a silly action flick where Keanu Reeves avenges his murdered dog. The movie turned out to be one of the best action films of that year, with Reeves perfectly cast as the legendary hitman. The film also had a great supporting cast, and the amount of world-building surrounding the film’s criminal underworld added an intriguing layer to the story.
John Wick: Chapter 2 built on the foundation of the original and made everything bigger – from the body count to the mythology of the world. The sequel ended on a perfect cliffhanger for the third movie, but in the meantime Starz has announced that they're developing a show set in the mythical hotel The Continental featured in the movies.

Slashfilm spoke with Carmi Zlotnick, the President of Original Programming for Starz, who revealed some interesting tidbits about the show at the TCA press tour. When it comes to the question of characters from John Wick appearing in the television series Ian McShane’s Winston is a natural choice, as he’s the eponymous hotel’s ever-present manager. Thankfully, Zlotnick confirmed those discussions are happening:
“There are certainly conversations about having Ian McShane back. The good part is we have some sort of insight into his schedule because of our involvement in American Gods. We’re in conversations with Ian.”
Zlotnick also stated the lead of The Continental will be a new character who starts out not being an assassin, but has ties to the assassin underworld, and the show itself will have the same style of gunplay as the John Wick movies. It would certainly be great to have McShane return; not only is the actor a welcome presence in any project, but his character would help tie the universe together.
While Keanu Reeves, who will serve as an executive producer on the series, is also expected to make an appearance, John Wick won’t be a major element of the show. The Continental should provide fertile ground for a spin-off, being a hotel filled with assassins and criminals of all description. The building also operates on its own strict set of codes and any guests who disobey usually pay a steep price.
Work is also progressing on John Wick: Chapter 3, which will round out the trilogy. While no story details have been released, the film is said to kick off shortly after the end of Chapter 2, and John’s origins will be explored. Maybe fans will finally get to see John’s legendary “final” job before his retirement, which has been heavily teased in the previous movies.
The Continental doesn’t currently have a premiere date, but we’ll keep you updated as more information arrives.
