After the massive success of John Wick: Chapter 4, it's now been revealed that a secret new movie in the John Wick universe is now in development. John Wick: Chapter 4 recently hit theaters, earning rave reviews and a franchise-best opening at the box office with $73.5 million domestically. It's still unclear if Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski will re-team for a fifth movie, but Reeves is set to appear as the titular assassin at least one more time in the upcoming Ana de Armas-led spinoff, Ballerina.
Now, in a recent interview with Collider, producer Erica Lee reveals that Lionsgate is developing a new movie in the John Wick universe. Although Reeves and Stahelski have hinted that John Wick: Chapter 4 could be the final chapter for them, the door is still open for more stories and Lee seems optimistic that the duo will return for another entry. Check out Lee's full comment below:
“There is another film that we're developing that I think we'll be announcing in the next, say, month or two. Then, I'm hopeful there's a ‘Ballerina 2,’ and ‘John Wick 5,’ and lots of other things. But we're developing a lot of stuff and having a lot of discussions with a lot of writers and brand management and Wick universe is my utmost priority.”
What The New John Wick Movie Could Be About
Although Reeves' titular assassin has always been the focal point around which the John Wick movies' revolve, the series has also introduced a host of interesting supporting characters. Ian McShane's Winston is already getting his own prequel series called The Continental, so he's likely off the table, but John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum does introduce Sofia, played by Halle Berry. Sofia proves herself just as capable an assassin as Wick, but her backstory is left largely unexplored, and Berry herself even hinted last year that a spinoff could be in the works.
John Wick: Chapter 4 also introduces several new characters who could be perfect vessels for a new spinoff movie. Akira, played by Rina Sawayama, only features relatively briefly in the new film but is left with an intriguing revenge mission that could provide the basis of a new movie. Shamier Anderson's mysterious Tracker, aka Nobody, is also introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, and he lives an assassin lifestyle that is largely distinct from his sharply-dressed peers, making him a promising candidate for further exploration.
Despite John Wick's fate in Chapter 4, it seems likely that the new John Wick movie will be based on a character who has already appeared in the franchise in some capacity, like Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King, for example, but it's also possible that the story will introduce an entirely new character who hasn't been seen before. While many questions remain regarding how the John Wick universe will continue to expand with new spinoff properties, it's clear that the appetite for more of Stahelski's assassin underworld is greater than ever.
