John Wick couldn't have come at a better time for Reeves either, as he was just coming off of the critical and commercial flop of 2013's 47 Ronin. Made on a massive $175 million budget, 47 Ronin absolutely tanked domestically, earning less than $40 million. Worldwide grosses helped a good deal, but the film ultimately came up about $20 million short of making back its budget. Thankfully, John Wick proved to be the polar opposite, earning rave reviews from critics and more than quadrupling its $20 million budget in theaters.
With only a few days remaining until highly-anticipated sequel John Wick: Chapter 2 hits theaters, the original John Wick has been given the Honest Trailers treatment. While Honest Trailers often delights in taking films down a peg, even their narrator seems quite impressed with John Wick overall, even stopping to marvel at how the action scenes are completely devoid of quick cuts and shaky cam. Check out the full video above.
Of course, great film or not, an Honest Trailer wouldn't be complete without some good-natured ribbing, and John Wick's is no different. Right off the bat, the narrator mentions the absurdity of Wick systematically murdering dozens of people in an effort to take out the one guy who stole his car and killed his dog. That's a major case of disproportionate retribution by just about any standard. Also mentioned is Wick's love of killing his enemies via headshot, with the narrator calling the film about 80% headshots at one point. There's also a good dig at the exepnse of the Matrix sequels.
Will John Wick: Chapter 2 live up to the awesomeness of the original? All signs so far point to yes, with the sequel currently holding an impressive 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Assuming all goes well, fans can likely anticipate the second John Wick film getting its own good-natured Honest Trailer before the end of 2017 arrives.
