Lionsgate has confirmed that John Wick 5 is in development, alongside other projects which will expand the John Wick universe. The latest release in the John Wick franchise, John Wick: Chapter 4, has been a hit in theaters, earning $428.8 million at the time of writing. This is the most amount of money a John Wick film has earned at the box office, proving the franchise's profitability into the future.

Now, according to Lionsgate (via Comicbook) in a recent earnings call, John Wick 5 is officially in development, solidifying the John Wick franchise's future. Lionsgate also teased the release of upcoming John Wick spinoffs, as well as a John Wick video game. Check out what Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake had to say during the earnings call below:

We're now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there's clear appetite by the audience. What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We're in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we're building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic -- will be organically grown out of how we're starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.

The Future Of The John Wick Franchise Explained

With John Wick 5 and plenty of spinoffs confirmed, it seems the franchise is just getting started on its future expansion. The John Wick franchise will start branching out from the Keanu Reeves-led movies with The Continental, a prequel miniseries set in the 1970s. As for movies, Ballerina will follow Ana de Armas' Rooney on her own quest for revenge between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. The Continental arrives on Peacock in September 2023, while Ballerina hits theaters on June 7, 2024.

While John Wick director Chad Stahelski has said John Wick 5 may not happen, confirmation from Lionsgate indicates John's story will continue. The development of John Wick 5 also has major implications for the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, which seemingly saw John die. If John Wick 5 is a direct sequel to John Wick: Chapter 4, then it would confirm John faked his death to keep anyone from finding him.

The post-credits scene in John Wick: Chapter 4 also implies the return of Donnie Yen's Caine and Rina Sawayama's Akira, with Akira seeking revenge on Caine for killing her father. Though it's possible Caine's conflict with Rina will be resolved in a spinoff, as producer Erica Lee confirmed another film set in the John Wick universe is also in development. The confirmation of John Wick 5, a video game, and multiple spinoffs bode well for the John Wick franchise's future and the expansive world of assassins it will explore.
