Revenge can't be contained in just three movies, so that means a John Wick 4 is officially on the way. One of the best wholly original movie series of the 2010s, the John Wick franchise has succeeded thanks to a mix of intensely choreographed action and ever-deepening alt-world building.

The story of John Wick is pretty simple. A retired assassin's dog is killed, bringing him out of retirement. But this is no regular assassin: this is John Wick, the Baba Yaga. His violence is brutal and drive for revenge relentless; by the time of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, he's enacting his balletic gun-fu against the might of the ruling High Table. And, it seems, that's just the start.

John Wick 3 was teased as the culmination of a trilogy, but its ending leaves the story wide open for John Wick 4. And, unsurprisingly given Parabellum's box office success, a fourth movie was announced after just four days of release. Here's everything we know about John Wick 4's development, story, and release date. It's fair to say, we haven't visited The Continental for the last time.

John Wick 4 Release Date

John Wick 3

John Wick 4 was originally assigned a release date of May 21, 2021. This would've put it in direct competition with fellow Keanu Reeves-fronted sequel The Matrix 4. However, Reeves was set to film John Wick 4 after Matrix 4, and due to Coronavirus production shutdowns, that became no longer possible in time for their formerly shared release date. Now, John Wick 4 is officially slated to release on May 27, 2022. A John Wick 5 is also already in the works.

John Wick 4 Cast

The cast of John Wick 4 is already brimming with talent, some new, some returning. Keanu Reeves will of course return as Wick, while Laurence Fishburne is back as The Bowery King, Ian McShane returns as Winston, and Lance Reddick reprises his role of Charon, concierge at The Continental hotel. Japanese-British pop star Rina Sawayama will play a new character called Akira, while martial arts movie legends Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins have joined in undisclosed roles. Alita: Battle Angel's Marko Zaror is set to play John Wick 4's primary villain, while Mortal Kombat 2021's Hiroyuki Sanada, Wynonna Earp's Shamier Anderson, IT's Bill Skarsgard, and prolific character actor Clancy Brown are also playing unknown roles.

John Wick 4 Story Details

Ian McShan as Winston in John Wick 3

While official details concerning John Wick 4's story are being kept secret for now, there was always clearly a plan for more John Wick, given the ending of Chapter 3 - Parabellum. After an intense fight to protect The Continental, Manager Winston shoots and seemingly kills John to regain the High Table's favor. John, however, isn't dead, and is taken to the Bowery King who speaks of revenge. Asking if John's angry, the battered and bruised assassin growls, "Yeah." This would quite clearly set up a John Wick 4 where John and the Bowery King work together against both the High Table and The Continental, delivering the all-out war that the Parabellum title teased.

A John Wick TV Series Is Also On The Way

John Wick - The Continental

But while John Wick's plotting revenge in the present, his franchise will also soon look to the past. Lionsgate is currently working on a John Wick TV spinoff for Starz called The Continental, centered on the coin-exchanging hotel that serves as a refuge for professional assassins. The series will primarily focus on a young Winston's rise in 1970s New York City, but potentially feature a Keanu Reeves cameo. Ian McShane has hinted he might provide some voiceover narration. This spinoff isn't planned to premiere until after John Wick 4 releases in theaters.
