Screen Rant: Is this really the end for John Wick?
Erica Lee: I hope not. I have heard Keanu say that this is the death of John Wick the character, but also, what does that mean? Is that the alias of John Wick? Is that the assassin John Wick? I think the answer is we don't know yet. I think we have more story to tell, and are hopeful for a fifth. In what capacity that is or what the story is, I don't know yet. But I'm hopeful.
How John Wick: Chapter 4's Ending Can Be Subverted
John Wick's death at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 is a huge shock, especially with John Wick: Chapter 5 expected in the future. Reeves saying this is the end of John Wick seems like the final nail in the titular character's coffin, it's possible that he faked his death to finally be free of the High Table. John's only connection outside the High Table is gone and has been since John Wick, which opens the door to new paths.
John Wick going into hiding could set up the perfect return in John Wick: Chapter 5, leaving audiences to wonder what would pull him out of retirement again. Initially, it was about avenging the death of his dog, a final gift from his late wife, and repaying an old debt. If John Wick is alive, the catalyst in John Wick: Chapter 5 would need to be even bigger because he would know the cost of returning to this world once more.
Whether John Wick is truly dead, this isn't the end of his story. Reeves will return in Ballerina, which is set between John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4. This could become a trend, especially if the universe continues to expand through spin-offs potentially exploring the origins of characters like the Bowery King, Caine, or Sofia Al-Azwar. John Wick: Chapter 4 could be the final chapter in his life, but there is still quite a bit of story left to tell.
