After years of delays in development, Keanu Reeves is set to return in John Wick: Chapter 4, bringing big-action star and franchise first Donnie Yen along with him. Fans of the John Wick franchise got a taste of the coming battle between John Wick and Caine (Yen) when the teaser trailer was released, but the full trailer offers a bit more insight into how Caine is involved with the Wick saga. Also getting more screen time in the full-length trailer are fellow newcomers to the franchise Bill Skarsgard and Hiroyuki Sanada. Each of them reveals hints to their identities through the minimal dialogue given between action shots.

John Wick is a monolith among action movie franchises, expanding the mythos of its assassins with each chapter. The fourth installment shows signs of following that trend, introducing new faces and factions yet again. In the John Wick: Chapter 4 teaser, Caine is seen fighting Wick, Marquis (Skarsgard) is revealed (though his relation to Wick is uncertain), and the same can be said for Shimazu (Sanada), thanks to his cryptic lines. Now, with more context from the full-length trailer and more scenes to pull from, it’s clear that Marquis and Caine stand together against John Wick, while Shimazu is revealed to be an old friend of John’s and a current ally.

Bill Skarsgard Makes His Villain Debut In The Wick Universe

John Wick chapter 4 Bill Skarsgard Keanu Reeves

Maybe it’s knowing his horribly brilliant reputation as Pennywise that makes Skarsgard’s visage so haunting in the trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4, but his character Marquis is definitely giving villain vibes. The main scene between Marquis and Wick is a parley where they are discussing terms for one-on-one combat, a situation clued in by the last of John Wick’s allies Winston (Ian McShane). Donnie Yen sits behind Marquis during negotiations, signifying his allegiance to Wick’s adversary, possibly as his right hand. Wick’s incredulousness at the news of being challenged suggests Marquis is a familiar of the High Table.

Regardless of his origin, Marquis clearly stands opposed to John Wick and seeks to end the legendary assassin in John Wick: Chapter 4. The level of malevolence Skarsgard will bring to an antagonist role within a brutal saga like John Wick will be bloody and brilliant to watch. Whether it’s just by Marquis’ connections that Caine is loyal to him, or a yet-to-be-seen ferocity that earned him stature among the world of assassins, Marquis and Caine will face John "Baba Yaga" Wick.

Donnie Yen’s Caine Could Be John Wick’s Match

Each of the John Wick sequels features at least one masterclass assassin competing with John throughout the movie. First, they posture through leers and quips before eventually meeting in combat; Wick did this both with Cassian (Common) and Ares (Ruby Rose) in John Wick: Chapter 2. The obsessive Zero (Mark Dacascos) followed this theme as well, stalking and mocking Wick before facing him in the final act. Judging from the church scene in which Caine and Wick trade dialogue and not-so-subtle threats, Caine will follow a similar path.

Displaying the nature of the past relationship between Caine and Wick could explain why Caine might be the one ghost from Wick’s past to finish him off. The dialogue, the stakes, and even the lyrics of the background music of the trailer all allude to the potential of the titular character meeting his end in John Wick: Chapter 4. The High Table has sanctioned this one-on-one combat in the upcoming sequel, which means they have extreme confidence in the power Marquis’ faction, or Caine’s ability to kill the Boogeyman of assassins.

Hiroyuki Sanada Looks Like John’s Only New Friend

John Wick is a man of few words, so when he calls newcomer Shimazu (Sanada) “friend” in the new trailer, it holds weight. Riddled with combat snapshots and dramatic glimpses of the new foes, Shimazu offers a few friendly words for John during the trailer. Notably, Shimazu’s skill level is teased with one scene showing him surrounded by enemies but standing firm. Another teases Shimazu’s own clash with Donnie Yen’s Caine, promising an epic sword fight. Aside from Shimazu, Wick hasn’t called any other known allegiances in John Wick: Chapter 4, but there’s a moment where Winston teases a reveal about John Wick’s family.

While Shimazu (Sanada) is the only new ally shown, the trailer hints that John Wick’s actual family sits at the High Table and is willing to help him in some way. With the entire assassin world is looking to kill the titular character in John Wick: Chapter 4, he’ll need all the help (and worldbuilding) he can get.
