John Wick 4 casts Bill Skarsgård in a mystery role. At one point, the highly-anticipated action sequel was slated to come out this summer, but it was one of the many projects affected by the coronavirus pandemic. After seeing its release date delayed to May 2022, the film has gotten back on track. John Wick 4 is scheduled to start production this month, with a globe-trotting shoot that will take the cast and crew to locations such as New York and Japan.
Ahead of principal photography, director Chad Stahelski has recently spent time filling out the supporting cast around returning star Keanu Reeves. So far, he's recruited Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, and Donnie Yen to the ensemble, with Yen said to be playing a character who's an old friend of John Wick's. All of these promise to be exciting additions to the John Wick universe, and they're set to be joined by at least one more big name.
According to Collider, Skarsgård is the latest to join the John Wick 4 cast. As was the case with Sawayama and Anderson, details about his character are unknown for the time being.
Skarsgård's filmography ranges from everything to indie dramas to blockbuster horror films to action movies, so whatever his John Wick 4 character calls for, he should be able to deliver a strong and entertaining performance. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the film's story and if he's aligned with John or more of a villain. With John and the Bowery King gearing up to go to war against Winston and the High Table, they will need all the help they can get, but it'd be smart if John Wick 4 had a main antagonist assassin to serve as one of the primary obstacles. Considering how varied Skarsgård's past credits are, it's difficult to gauge at this juncture what type of person he'll play. He's made a name for himself as a diverse character actor.
It remains to be seen if there are other additions to the John Wick 4 cast prior to filming. Besides Reeves, it's expected franchise veterans like Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane will return to reprise their roles, meaning the ensemble is already pretty stacked. While it's great John Wick 4 is introducing new faces to keep things fresh, it also has to balance that with continuing storylines and character arcs from the previous movies and make sure everyone involved is well-served. A case can be made John Wick 4 would benefit from a little less mythology and world-building, so it will be interesting to see how many more come on board.
