Halle Berry is reportedly being considered to play the new female lead opposite Keanu Reeves in Lionsgate's upcoming John Wick: Chapter 3.

In 2014, Chad Stahelski directed the original John Wick film, which immediately earned a rabid following with its mashup of genres and Gun Fu aesthetic. The film tripled its $29.7 million budget at the box office, paving the way for the 2017 sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2. Though Reeves’ star power was strong enough to carry both neo-noir films, the supporting cast didn’t necessarily feature a similarly A-list female lead - which is where Berry comes into play. In addition to being a Best Actress Oscar winner, Berry already has a role in the James Bond franchise under her belt (she played Jinx in 2002’s Die Another Day) and has starred in several X-Men films as Ororo Munro aka Storm. More recently, Berry added another spy movie franchise to her resume via her role in the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

According to THS, Berry is being eyed to costar in John Wick: Chapter 3 as Sofia, a character described as being a "woman, 20-40, who has a small child." There aren't too many details for the role beyond that, though Lionsgate is reportedly looking at a diverse collection of actresses to read for the part. For the time being, however, Berry is believed to be the studio's top choice.

There’s been much speculation about where John Wick 3 will take place, and which characters from the previous movies will be returning alongside Reeves as Mr. Wick himself. In addition to filming in Montreal (which will sub for New York), it's been reported that John Wick: Chapter 3 might also take place in Japan. However, based on the official synopsis for the film released at CinemaCon 2018, the third John Wick movie will primarily take place in New York City.

Berry would undoubtedly be a crucial addition for John Wick 3, but it’s still unclear what role she would play in the titular character’s journey out of New York. Berry has remained pretty active onscreen in recent years; in 2017 alone, she both appeared in the Kingsman movie sequel and starred in the child abduction thriller Kidnap. With her star-power on the rise again of late, Berry seems like a logical choice to strengthen and further diversify the John Wick 3 cast, along with Reeves and other potential returning players like John Wick: Chapter 2 costars Common, Ruby Rose, and Laurence Fishburne.
