A new image from John Wick: Chapter 3 gives fans their first look at Halle Berry's character, Sofia. The Oscar-winning actress is one of several high-profile additions to the acclaimed action franchise, and the expectation is she will be the film's female lead. However, this does not mean she will portray a villain, as reports about Berry's role point to her portraying a middle-aged mother with a small child, who obviously becomes intertwined in John Wick's exploits in one way or another. It remains to be seen if Berry will partake in the action herself, or if she's someone for John to protect.
John Wick 3 recently started filming in order to make its scheduled May 2019 release date. This of course meant set photos of the location shoot were quick to emerge online, but Lionsgate isn't wasting any time to start drumming up hype for the sequel themselves. Case in point, there's already an official photo of Berry's Sofia all dressed up for business.

The official John Wick Twitter account shared the picture today, giving it the vague caption, "A woman on a mission." You can check it out for yourself in the space below:
Sofia appears to be in the main lobby of the Continental Hotel, the famous hangout for members of the franchise's underground assassin community. Clearly, she's in possession of two dogs, perhaps leaving them with concierge Charon (played by Lance Reddick) before heading out on an assignment. It'll be interesting to see what Sofia's dynamic with John is. Since the character was never specified as a villain, it's possible she's an ally of Wick's who decides to come to his aid in his quest to stay alive. Remember, John was excommunicado at the end of Chapter 2, meaning he's a target for anyone who wants to collect on the massive contract on his head. A woman on a mission like Sofia sounds like someone John could use in his corner.
Based on character descriptions from the full casting announcement, it appears Chapter 3 is going to continue to flesh out the franchise's intricate universe, which ideally will help keep things fresh. Since its debut in 2014, the John Wick property is renowned for its world-building, and several of the additions in last year's sequel went over well with audiences. Since this is conceivably the final big screen outing for the former hitman, director Chad Stahelski is looking to pull out all the stops and deliver another explosive adventure. He's smart enough to know John Wick can't just get by on gun-fu alone, so there should be some compelling drama to boot.
