[UPDATE: The full John Wick: Chapter 3 cast has now been revealed!]
Halle Berry is now an official member of the John Wick: Chapter 3 cast. The third film in the John Wick series is currently in production, with Keanu Reeves once again starring and Chad Stahelski back calling the shots in his own third rodeo. Other returning John Wick cast members reportedly include Laurence Fishburne as the Bowery King and Ian McShane as The Continental's head honcho Winston. Chapter 2 additions Common and Ruby Rose are also supposedly coming back, after their characters (nearly) met their maker at John's hands during their last encounters with "The Boogeyman".
Similar to how Chapter 2 picks up less than a week after the first John Wick, the synopsis confirms that Chapter 3 takes place right after the events of the second movie (maybe even mere hours later). With John now on the run and just about every assassin in New York eager to collect the hefty bounty on his head, he will need all the help he can get to stay alive. Fortunately for him, rumor has it Berry's character will be a potential ally for John in the film.
It was reported a month ago that Berry was circling John Wick: Chapter 3, but the Oscar-winner has now made it official via a post to her Instagram account (see below). THR is further reporting that Berry will not be playing the movie's villain, which aligns with the previous report about her would-be role in the film. Not much else is known at the moment about her character (who is named Sofia), though it's been suggested that she's a middle-aged mother with a small child of her own.
Berry is far from a stranger to franchise fare, having previously played Storm in multiple X-Men films and appeared in both the James Bond and Kingsman movie series. While Berry was right in the middle of the action in those films, it sounds like her John Wick character might be more of an ordinary person who gets pulled into the underworld of assassins and killers for hire that John keeps trying in vain to leave behind him. Then again, given that Berry has already proven her action star bona fides many times over, she may well be playing a professional hit-woman who teams up with John on his increasingly desperate mission to avoid a premature death.
Even if John makes it out of Chapter 3 still breathing, this might be the end of the road for him. Stahelski has said the film will continue to expand the John Wick universe and further explore how it and the High Table works, but at the same time offer a "nice completion" to John's personal journey. It's possible then that, whoever she is, Berry's character will offer John the hope of a new beginning and a life far away from the underworld that he thought his escaped back when he first accomplished his famously "impossible" task.
