The much-anticipated action sequel John Wick: Chapter 3 has officially started filming, and the occasion has been marked by some tantalizing BTS photos being shared online. One of those photos also confirms a location for the film, and shows Keanu Reeves in an atmospheric neon-drenched street.
Both of the John Wick movies have met with some critical acclaim, good box office, and have also been credited by some for reinvigorating star-led action film franchises. John Wick: Chapter 2 made over $171M worldwide gross and easily left the door open for further escapades by the lethally talented hitman. That movie ended with Wick intentionally breaking the code of the underground killer's fraternity and earning a $14M contract on his head. The early synopsis for John Wick 3 describes him as being on the run and "fighting and killing his way out of New York City." The film was originally expected to start shooting sometime in April, with the release set for May 2019.
With the principal photography having only just started, the cinematographer took to Instagram to share some BTS shots of the production. Dan Laustsen worked as the director of photography on John Wick: Chapter 2, as well as Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. His first photo, which marks Day 1 of the shoot, was posted to Instagram and shows the clapperboard with the recently announced working title 'Parabellum'. You can check it out below:
The second photo is more revealing and comes from Day 2 of filming. It shows a dishevelled Reeves drenched in rain on a neon-lit street. The street marker shows it to be Pell Street in New York, which is in the middle of Chinatown. This is unsurprising given that the city is expected to be an integral part of the action, but it's still a stunning shot and opens up questions as to why Wick may be visiting the area. You can see the photo below:
Neither BTS photo gives much away about the story or action sequences, apart from that one location and the possible concern for Wick's absent dog. But it does indicate that the film will be as stylish and visually accomplished as its two predecessors. Along with Reeves, there were rumors that Tilda Swinton and Halle Berry may be joining the action. But the only other confirmed returning cast member so far is Ruby Rose as Ares, although Ian McShane is also expected to make an appearance as Winston.
Returning director Chad Stahelski had previously confirmed that Chapter 3 would be a trilogy-closer and include some details about "where John comes from." There have also been some rumors that the plot could see John finally leave New York and possibly head to some international destinations. But whatever the storyline, it looks like we can confidently expect another great-looking excursion for the dog-loving assassin if these BTS photos are anything to go by. More updates on John Wick: Chapter 3 as we get them.
