Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring John Krasinski has been renewed by Amazon for a third season. The announcement of a season 3 by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke comes before the season 2 debut of the series. Jack Ryan premiered on August 31, 2018 on Amazon Prime with The Office star Krasinski playing the title character, a former marine suddenly thrust into the world of counterterrorism due to his expertise in financial analytics.
The Jack Ryan character was created by Tom Clancy, whose espionage and military-science storylines would give birth to a number of films featuring Ryan. Krasinski is not the first actor to portray the grounded hero. Other actors who've played Jack Ryan include Harrison Ford in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin in The Hunt For Red October, Ben Affleck in The Sum Of All Fear,s and Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. However, the series starring Krasinski is the first to not be a direct adaptation of Clancy’s novels. And the renewal of the Amazon thriller preceding the start of season two shows off its popularity and longevity.
Produced by Paramount Television, the Amazon hit aired a Super Bowl trailer which caused interest to peak and a spike in views for season one. Jack Ryan is backed by high-powered names, including executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost), Graham Roland, Michael Bay and Krasinski himself in a decision-making seat. According to The Wrap, Amazon eagerly ordered episodes for a season two last April, months before the series premiere. So the news of an early season 3 renewal does not come as a surprise.
With Amazon Prime users now secure about a season 3, there are still season 2 details unfolding. Abbie Cornish (who plays Jack Ryan’s love interest) and Wendell Pierce (The Wire) (who plays Jack’s boss) are returning as series regulars. Joining the globetrotting show’s cast are Tom Wlaschiha (Game Of Thrones) Noomi Rapace (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Jovan Adepo (The Leftovers). Co-creator Cuse will join the directorial lineup again, but new addition Dennie Gordon (Empire) is also slated to steer a trio of episodes.
Since leaving his role as loveable Jim Halpert in The Office, Krasinski has transformed from a reliable everyman to a serious action hero. His talents have shone from in-front of camera to behind as well with his directorial debut on the smash hit A Quiet Place, which is now in talks for a sequel also written by Krasinski. The role of Jack Ryan has always been played by strong, smart and charismatic men of Hollywood, and has reached a new level with Krasinski strapping in to bring new depth to the character. Now with the apparent Midas-touch, audiences will look forward to whatever project Krasinski does next and at the rate its going, there would be no surprise in a further continuation of of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.
