Coming straight from the Peacemaker himself, John Cena says fans aren't ready for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad after the star watched the full film. It's clear that Gunn's taking his own approach to the supervillain story, and giving the fans the violence they were missing from the 2016 film. After the critical disappointment of David Ayer's Suicide Squad, Gunn is revamping the whole story. The film will stand on its own plot-wise but is bringing back a few original cast members, notably Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and will be joined by plenty of newcomers, including Cena as the Peacemaker.
In the upcoming Suicide Squad 2, Task Force X is back and ready to risk their lives in order to repay their debts to society. The imprisoned villains are put on a mission by none other than A.R.G.U.S. director, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who makes a return from Ayer's take. A trip to a Nazi-era prison leads the group to a head-to-head battle with Starro, the massive psychic starfish. Gunn's already warned fans not to get too attached to the members of the new squad, as many will be killed off throughout.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Cena gave his review of The Suicide Squad after his first viewing. "You are not ready," Cena said. "That's all I have to say about that and people will understand." Check out the clip of Cena hyping up the film below:
The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6. And just about everyone involved co-signs Cena's review that the film takes it up a notch, which is why they recommend an in-theater viewing. Considering Suicide Squad was a box-office smash despite wavering reviews, fans are sure to flood the theater to check out The Suicide Squad to escape the summer heat with some dark supervillain humor. Or at least, that seems to be the hope from the Warner Bros. squad, particularly after the box-office blunder, Birds Of Prey.
The hype is real for Warner Bro. to get the Suicide Squad comics translated better on the big screen. So Gunn's version has a lot to live up to, both commercially and critically. What's more, is that HBO has already signed off on a Peacemaker spinoff, so the character has to be a hit. However, with big-name actors and promises for real R-rated action, The Suicide Squad sounds like it will live up to all the hype.
