It's easy to forget that there have been only two theatrical trailers unveiled for director Andrew Stanton's live-action/CGI treatment of Edgar Rice Burroughs' sci-fi novel "A Princess of Mars", here re-titled John Carter. There has been so much in the way of advanced footage released for the film, it almost feels as though anyone who regularly visits their local movie theater should be sick of hearing about it by now.
That's far from the case, though, judging by the film's weak preliminary tracking results, which suggest that awareness and interest are not that high among casual moviegoers. Hence, Disney has released a third (and final) John Carter trailer that'll be airing on big screens around the U.S. during the week-and-a-half left until the movie hits theaters.
John Carter tells the tale of the titular character, a Civil War veteran who seeks solitude following the loss of his family. He is instead accidentally transported to Mars, an alien world where Carter discovers he can perform incredible physical feats due to the weaker gravitational pull of the red planet; a quality which soon attracts the attention of the Martian world's warring inhabitants, including the Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) and power-hungry Matai Shang (Mark Strong).
Check out the final theatrical trailer for John Carter:
An early John Carter screening for critics has helped generate more positive buzz around the film, with the consensus from those few who have seen the film being that it's a flawed, but fun sci-fi title that delivers loads of impressive action spectacle and eye candy (see: the White Ape coliseum fight in the above trailer). Disney heads should be glad to hear that, seeing how this $250 million adaptation of a beloved century-old, sci-fi literary series is meant to serve as the first entry in a new cash-cow for the Mouse House.
We're at the point now where's it hard to say for certain whether John Carter is indeed going to be like the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie - which opened well enough before going on to become a bonafide box office smash thanks to word-of-mouth - or perform somewhat below expectations, like previous Disney titles which were meant to kickoff similarly lucrative franchises (see: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and TRON: Legacy).
The answer will be provided soon, as John Carter is ready to invade 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. on March 9th, 2012.
