'John Carter': Conceptual Art & Super Bowl TV Spot Teaser

It's a recurring tradition for the biggest blockbuster titles hitting the silver screen in any year to be promoted during the respective Super Bowl, and 2012 will be no exception. While a handful of anticipated titles are reportedly NOT going to be featured in TV spots during Super Bowl XLVI (like The Dark Knight Rises) other tentpole pics are definitely going to make an appearance - including, Walt Disney Pictures' costly (re: $250 million) John Carter adaptation.

Today, we have some conceptual artwork from the Mouse House's classic sci-fi literary flick, available for viewing - along with a teaser for the actual John Carter Super Bowl spot (and yes, we know that a teaser for a commercial is kind of a stretch).

Here is Disney's official description of the project:

“John Carter” is a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars) and is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film, directed by Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton, tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

The latest John Carter artwork provides a better look at not only the Barsoom landscape and architecture, but also several of its more native inhabitants - including, the humanoids Princes Thoris (Collins), Sab Than (Dominic West), and Matai Shang (Mark Strong) - along with Carter's "scene-stealing" Martian dog, Woola.

Now have a look at the teaser for the John Carter Super Bowl preview:

John Carter looks great, with regards to how Stanton and his production team have visually realized Burroughs' fantastical alien landscapes and characters (passing over the creative liberties they've taken during the adaptation process). Hopefully, whatever new footage is featured in the film's actual Super Bowl TV spot will do a better job of making this flick look like it has more than just eye candy to offer - a task which the official John Carter trailer didn't manage all that well, in our opinion.

Look for John Carter to be released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters in the U.S. on March 9th, 2012.
