Director and horror icon, John Carpenter, is finally back behind the camera where he rightfully belongs, filming his next horror/thriller film The Ward. It's been a long drought for fans of his Carpenter's stylings; the last film he directed was 2001 sci-fi horror flop film Ghosts of Mars (still scratching my head as to why he went with Ice Cube for the lead). If you want to go back to his last GOOD horror film, then you'll need to reach back a few more years to 1998 and the fantastic movie Vampires with the ever popular James Woods.
The Ward has a fairly interesting female cast with Amber Heard (Zombieland), Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies), Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick Ass, Hot Tub Time Machine) and newcomer Sali Sayler all confined to a psychiatric hospital where Heard has just been committed. Fringe guest-star Jared Harris rounds out the cast as Dr. Stringer, who most likely is the cause of much mental and physical anguish in The Ward. While there, Kristen (Heard) meets other girls in the ward who have their own sets of problems and eventually discovers a mysterious girl who haunts the halls while everyone sleeps.
Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting pointed us to the French station Canal Plus for an exclusive look at the first eighteen seconds of footage released to the public. Be aware though, it's all in French, so unless vous parlez français, then you'll need to check out our video below:
The Ward is written by the brothers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, who are still green to the world of cinema having only one other film to their credit, Dark Feed, which hasn't finished production yet. Brand new writers could either be a good thing because they haven't been tainted by some of the mediocrity in Hollywood and will try to their absolute best for their first outing. However, it could very well turn out to be a bad thing because, well, they are still new and learning and that could show in their script. Either way, with Carpenter directing, The Ward should at least be entertaining (just forget Ghosts of Mars ever existed).
The first part of the footage above is a tad chilling and did you SEE the size of those needles??? I'd be screaming like a little girl too.
So, what do you think of the footage and premise of The Ward? Does it excite you to know that John Carpenter is helming this project?
You will be committed to The Ward in 2010.
