Actor John Boyega has compared his upcoming new film They Cloned Tyrone to Attack the Block. The 28-year-old actor made his feature film debut in Attack the Block back in 2011 and has since gone on to bigger things, including a substantial role as ex-stormtrooper Finn in the latest Star Wars trilogy.

Known for its comedy as much as its scares, Attack the Block appealed to fans of films such as Shaun of the Dead and even Men in Black. It marked the big-screen directorial debut of Joe Cornish, who has worked numerous times with filmmaker Edgar Wright, hence Attack the Block’s similar feel and tone to Wright’s style of filmmaking. As a low budget debut, the film performed well and certainly gave audiences a chance to get to know Boyega. The story followed a group of South London teens, who realize that something strange is going down in their council estate. Banding together in order to take on what appears to be an alien invasion, the teen sci-fi comedy was a huge step forward for Cornish’s career, though many have wondered why a sequel to Attack the Block has yet to materialize. As for Boyega, it took another four years after the film’s release for him to find his way to Star Wars.

Now fully recognizable thanks to his time as Finn, Boyega is moving on to other projects. Having already said that he’s not interested in doing more Star Wars films should the opportunity arise, Boyega has spoken about one of the first projects he’s done since Rise of Skywalker. While chatting with ComingSoon.net, Boyega teased a bit of information about They Cloned Tyrone. The new film stars Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris (Dear White People), and Boyega revealed that it is a little like Attack the Block:

“The film is going to be like Attack the Block for stateside, I’ll give you that. Juel’s making his directorial debut with the movie and he wrote a brilliant script. I mean, you don’t just attract Jamie Foxx with nothing, this is a really well-written one that I think is going to be a lot of fun.”

Though exact plot details about the film are somewhat scarce, what is known about the directorial debut of Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone (beyond Boyega’s hints, that is), is that it focuses on three characters who begin to investigate a series of strange happenings in their neighborhood. Reportedly a cross between Friday and Get Out, things become downright dangerous for the film’s trio of characters when they discover a conspiracy taking place right where they live. Judging by this and the film’s title, it’s arguable that some sort of alien effort is taking place to turn the local inhabitants into something other than human.

Boyega’s assessment of the film being what it is, it’s understandable how the comparison to Attack the Block could be made. However, fans of Edgar Wright might also sense some similarity to the filmmaker’s The World's End, which focused on an alien plot to replace the inhabitants of a sleepy town with perfected clones. Whatever the case, it sounds like They Cloned Tyrone is already shaping up to be something special.
