Joe Carnahan Talks The Grey & White Jazz

Carnahan spoke to Cinematical about his future projects, and with regards to The Grey he said:

"There's a film that I wrote that I want to do called The Grey, which is about a group of pipeline workers in Alaska flying back into civilization after being remote for a number of months. The 737 they're on goes down, and they begin to be hunted by a pack of rogue wolves. It's very much a man vs. nature adventure, existentialist kind of drama that I want to do. We're very, very close to it now."

Carnahan, however, is quite a realist and he's aware that getting a film together in Hollywood is easier said than done. In fact, Carnahan probably knows this more than most as over the last few years he's had a James Ellroy adaptation named White Jazz (that was set to star George Clooney) and a remake of Bunny Lake is Missing with Reese Witherspoon fall apart at the last minute.  The director has also been trying to get a film about Pablo Escobar named Killing Pablo off the ground as well.

Carnahan said that if The Grey doesn't make it in front of cameras then maybe one of those other stalled projects will:

"If not, Killing Pablo's always going to be up there for me and White Jazz – I'm still bound and determined to make that movie."

The director is aware that in the current economic climate it might be difficult to get relatively noncommercial films like White Jazz made:

On the up side, it would seem that the Narc director is pretty happy that Bunny Lake fell apart:

At least Carnahan is keeping active - if you haven't seen the above mentioned Narc it's worth checking out, and The A-Team should put enough bums on seats to pretty much guarantee that Carnahan gets to direct whatever he wants (budget permitting).
