Here's a match in geek heaven for you: J.J. Abrams is executive producing a new action serial scripted by Christopher Nolan's brother (and frequent writing partner) Jonathan. Now CBS has acquired the pilot episode for the show, which is titled Person of Interest.
J. Nolan recently wrapped up screenwriting duties on The Dark Knight Rises and will venture into the waters of television for the first time with Person of Interest. It'll be the second series made under the Bad Robot banner that's been picked up recently, following in the footsteps of Alcatraz.
Deadline describes Person of Interest as "a crime drama centered on a CIA agent, presumed dead, who is recruited by a reclusive billionaire to wage war against violent criminals in New York City." This is familiar territory for J. Nolan, who's by now well-versed in crafting gritty stories about vigilantes with strong financial backing, doing battle with deranged madmen in metropolitan areas. Yes, the Batman comparisons are obvious, but that's just another reason to be intrigued by this project.
While this will be his fist solo outing as a writer, Jonathan has surely picked up a trick or two from his well-accomplished sibling by now. It also ought to be mentioned that he was the creator of the original short story behind Memento, so we already know that Chris isn't the only Nolan capable of delivering some clever twists within the framework of an all-too familiar genre - be it Noir, crime drama, or both.
Just don't expect Person of Interest to feature anyone flying about NYC in a heavily-armored costume.
Abrams is more associated nowadays with mind-bending sci-fi shows like Fringe or the fantastical subject matter of Lost, but he really got his career going with the international spy adventure series Alias (that and Felicity, but moving on...). He'll also be on familiar ground with Person of Interest, though the show should really be thought of as Jonathan Nolan's first and Abrams' a more distant second.
