J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot are producing an original supernatural western titled The Pinkerton. The Star Trek/Star Wars filmmaker and his production label have been busier than ever lately, following their massive deal with WarnerMedia last year. In addition to their upcoming slate of original genre projects, Bad Robot and Abrams are reported to be in early discussions to develop multiple films and TV shows based on DC's Justice League Dark comic book series for Warner Bros. Now, the studio has since acquired yet another item for Abrams and Co. to add to their to-do list.

THR is reporting WB has picked up a spec script titled The Pinkerton for Abrams and Bad Robot to produce. Written by Dan Casey, the project is described as being a "supernatural revenge thriller" in a "Western setting". The script, of course, gets its name from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which was formed by Allan Pinkerton in 1850 and performed a variety of tasks (some notoriously unscrupulous, others more respectable) for companies and corporations throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Pinkerton would mark a reunion for Abrams and Casey, after the latter did a rewrite on the Abrams-produced 10 Cloverfield Lane. Casey further wrote the 2018 sci-fi thriller Kin and co-wrote this year's Fast & Furious 9, in addition to Joe Carnahan's upcoming hitman thriller Leo from Toledo. He's an up and comer, in other words, and The Pinkerton already sounds like the sort of high-concept, mystery box, genre-blending production Abrams and Bad Robot have long specialized in making (see also: the original Cloverfield, Super 8, Overlord). Although it doesn't appear that Abrams is planning to direct the film himself, it is meant to be a theatrical release, so additional details may be arriving in the foreseeable future.

In addition to The Pinkerton, Abrams and Bad Robot are currently developing an original TV show called Contraband for HBO. Formerly titled Demimonde, the series is described as being "an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama [with a plot] centered around a world's battle against a monstrous, oppressive force."
