Jimmy Kimmel and his talk show sidekick Guillermo pitched some ideas for the next Star Wars trilogy to filmmaker Rian Johnson in a hilarious video on Friday night's The Last Jedi themed episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! With about two weeks to go before the release of The Last Jedi, the film's press tour is punching the hyperdrive, with a large contingent of the cast and crew making interview stops on talk shows and press junkets.
Friday night's gathering on Jimmy Kimmel Live! proved to be the biggest interview gathering of the Star Wars conglomerate yet, with Johnson appearing on Kimmel's show alongside stars Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, and Gwendoline Christie. BB-8 even rolled into the show for good measure.
Apart from the appearances by Johnson and company, Kimmel employed some funny video skits during the show, including a "pitch meeting" at Johnson's office to give the writer-director some ideas for characters they'd like to see in the upcoming Star Wars trilogy that Johnson is developing. Since Johnson is writing and directing the first film in the new trilogy after J.J. Abrams wraps up the current one with Episode IX, Kimmel thought that maybe the filmmaker would like to hear some of his ideas.
In the video, Kimmel brings in an office file box while Guillermo toted in an easel to display sketches of their ideas. Confirming with the filmmaker that the new trilogy will introduce a whole new slate of characters, Kimmel says to Johnson, "Well, we've been working on some stuff and I think we can help you with this. You don't have to use all of these, but I think there are definitely going to be 7 or 18 characters of these that you're going to like and are going to want to use."
The first character Kimmel pitched to Johnson was "Senor Tapas" (the TV talker says Guillermo came up with the idea), an alien who "serves food in very small portions." Guillermo pointed out to Johnson that the Senor Tapas also serves "shots of tequila, too."
Kimmel also pitched singers for a Jabba's Palace-like environment, so he showed a sketched of a boy band called "Star Boys." Kimmel says the tentacled, humanoid-like singers could be "like the Star Wars version of One Direction." But Kimmel wasn't done yet, he pitched the lightsaber-wielding monkey "Duncan Squidge," who is basically Boots from Dora the Explorer, as well as "Bikini Chewbacca."
Kimmel concluded the pitch session with ideas for the endings of the three movies that included one of the film saga's classic characters … times 17. The video concludes with a laugh-out-loud funny ode to a legendary Han Solo scene from the original Star Wars film from 1977, where Rian Johnson makes sure he shoots first.
Since details of the film are being kept under such tight wraps and new footage is coming out only little by little, it's fun to see some creative ways Star Wars themed skits until The Last Jedi comes out, and Kimmel's skit is a good example of that. The skit may not be the new footage of the film that fans are looking for, but it's definitely good for some laughs.
