Jessica Simpson’s book signing for her new tell-all memoir, Open Book, was nearly canceled due to a mob of angry anti-fur protestors. Simpson had no choice but to put a smile back on for her appearance after an intense altercation.
Simpson was one of the biggest sex icons of the early 2000’s thanks to hits like "Irresistible" and "Without You." The singer kept a clean look about her as she grew up in Texas as the daughter of a preacher and was taught to save sex for marriage. Simpson often battled it out on the charts between Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera for the number one spot on shows such as MTV’s Total Request Live. To fans great pleasure, she married 98 Degrees singer, Nick Lachey but the couple divorced in 2005 after starring in their own reality TV show together, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.
As reported by TMZ, Simpson came head to head with animal rights activists over the fact that she still wears real fur. It all went down in New York City while Simpson was dining out at a restaurant Il Mulino. The singer was confronted by a mob of anti-fur protesters who shouted names at her such as "animal abuser" and "shame on you" before she was able to jump into her private SUV to escape. One particular protester made their point by yelling after her, "What type of person would wear fur in 2020?"
Unfortunately, this was not Simpson’s first run-in with animal rights protesters as she had an altercation on Tuesday night when she arrived to sign her new memoir Open Book at Barnes & Noble. The signing event was bombarded by upset protesters who began to scream at the singer and held up signs when Simpson took the stage to make her speech. Simpson had to head backstage until security had kicked the protesters out. Her fans in line tried showing support by cheering her name and eventually she reappeared to talk about her book.
Simpson was not the only celebrity that had been targeted by this particular group as they have gone after Jennifer Lopez and Kate Upton as well. Fans of Simpson are a bit surprised that she continues to wear fur as she first started back in the late 1990s but none of her Jessica Simpson clothing lines use real fur as her trim is faux fur. Maybe Simpson should take a page from her own collection and start wearing humane alternatives.
