It has been confirmed that David Tennant will be making a return appearance as Kilgrave/The Purple Man in season 2 of Marvel and Netflix's Jessica JonesThe news comes just a few days before Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones makes her triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe this Friday with the release of Marvel and Netflix's team-up miniseries, The Defenders. But while The Defenders will feature Jessica teaming up with Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), it won't be long after that before fans can finally see the long-awaited second season of Jessica Jones.

Season 2 of Jessica Jones' has been filming for some time now in New York, and as such, there has been a fair amount of set photos and possible story details leaking from the production fairly frequently over the past few months. While no one involved in the show has hinted at his possible return or role in the new season either, the influence/impact that Tennant's villainous, monstrous Kilgrave may have over Jessica and the show's other characters in the new season, has been a constant point of speculation and discussion amongst fans.

This morning as well, EW has officially confirmed that Tennant will be reprising his role as Kilgrave in season two of Jessica Jones. However, aside from the first photo of Tennant and Ritter together on set (which you can see below), the publication says all details surrounding Kilgrave's return to the series are being kept under tight wraps for the time being.

David Tennant and Krysten Ritter On Set of Jessica Jones Season 2

While Tennant's Kilgrave has become regarded as one of the greatest onscreen comic book villains to date, fans were uncertain if they'd ever get to see the actor reprise his role as the character again. The first season of Jessica Jones did end, after all, with Ritter's Jones becoming immune to Kilgrave's mind control powers, which gave her the ability to finally kill him once and for all, by snapping his neck in the season finale. And as a result of that, the reasons behind Kilgrave's return to the series are especially unclear as of right now.

It's possible that Tennant could be returning in some kind of flashback to a moment before even the events of the show's first season, which was a device that Jessica Jones used frequently throughout its freshman run. It's not uncommon for comic book villains to return from the dead either, though, that'd be something the Netflix series would have to take some serious time to explain. Considering the impact that Kilgrave had over Jessica's psyche as well, it's equally possible that he could be appearing as a ghost/vision conjured up by Jessica's mind, as a result of her own PTSD. So at this point, it's impossible to know for sure how exactly Kilgrave is returning to the Marvel/Netflix series, but for the Jessica Jones fans out there who were desperately hoping to see more from Tennant's Purple Man, the show's second season will now, at the very least, be delivering on that request.
