Jessica Chastain Heads To 'Oblivion'; Rodrigo Santoro May Join 'Last Stand'

TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski has found one of the leading ladies for his next sci-fi adventure: a film adaptation of the Oblivion comic book (which Kosinski co-wrote) that was previously being referred to as Horizons, but is currently officially untitled.

Meanwhile, the cast for director Jee-woon Kim's Fast and the Furious-style western, The Last Stand, looks to continue filling out its cast - now that it has Arnold Schwarzenegger set as the protagonist and Peter Stormare onboard as one of the main villains.

While Last Stand will mark Schwarzenegger's return to playing the lead in action movies, his next onscreen appearance will be in The Expendables 2. Last Stand will hit theaters during the early portion of 2013 - whereas Kosinski's film will arrive right in the middle of the summer blockbuster season.

Jessica Chastain in 'The Debt'

Few people had any idea who Jessica Chastain twelve months ago, but 2011 has definitely been a breakout year for the actress. Between her well-received lead performances in Tree of Life and The Debt - along with a secondary role in The Help - and important parts in upcoming dramatic titles such as Take Shelter, Texas Killing Fields, and Coriolanus, Chastain has been seemingly ubiquitous of late.

Chastain's name was included on a previously-released actress shortlist for Kosinski's new directorial effort - and Universal Pictures has announced that she will indeed play one of the female leads roles in the film, whatever it ends up being called.

There are two possibilities, with regards to which character Chastain is up to portray:

  1. Vika, a maintenance drone repairwoman who works alongside Jak (Tom Cruise) on the ruined surface of a post alien-invasion Earth.
  2. Julia, a mysterious woman discovered in a crashed ship on the planet's surface - one who forces Jak to question "everything he knows."

It's possible that one of the other four on-the-rise talents previously shortlisted for the film - including Kosinski's Legacy starlet, Olivia Wilde - could still snag the other female lead role.

Either way, having someone like Chastain as part of the cast reads as a plus for the project - even if it does ultimately end up being primarily a "Tom Cruise on the run" sci-fi thriller (a la Minority Report).

The Last Stand

Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes in '300'

Latino Review has learned that Rodrigo Santoro - best known for playing Xerxes in 300 and Paulo on Lost - is in the midst of negotiations to join The Last Stand, which will test Schwarzenegger's ability to headline a bankable action-thriller in the aftermath of his stint as the California governor (and his much-publicized marital scandal).

Last Stand revolves around an escaped drug cartel leader who is literally racing to cross over the U.S.-Mexico border. The last thing that stands (get it?) between him and freedom is small-town Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) - a disgraced ex-LAPD lawman - and his small, but capable, police force.

Santoro is up to play the part of Frank Martinez, a young cop - officially described as "reliable but likes to occasionally cut loose and party when he has the chance" - who works alongside Owens in the dusty border town of Sommerton Junction. So, in other words, just your average semi-rookie who has to rise to the occasion when the aforementioned fleeing criminal's cronies (led by Stormare's character) show up.

With a mix of plot elements from thrillers like Fast and the Furious, Die Hard, and the western High Noon - not to mention, a cult director like Kim making his English-language directing debut - it will be interesting to see how The Last Stand turns out. Here's hoping for the best.

The Last Stand is slated for theatrical release in the U.S. on January 18th, 2013.

Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion adaptation is currently scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on July 19th, 2013.
