Over the years there have been plenty of adaptations of the classic fairytale Hansel and Gretel, from a 1954 stop-motion animated film to an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which put a new twist on the tale (to name but a couple).
We're reportedly going to be getting yet another version of the tale, entitled Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters which is set to be helmed by Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), who is making his English-language debut. That news apparently became known awhile back, but now we learn who may end up portraying the titular characters.
Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, was doing an interview for Ben Affleck's The Town at the Venice Film Festival and let slip that he's up for the role of Hansel, while the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace, is up for the role of Gretel. We already got wind of the latter when Rapace was in Hollywood meeting with various filmmakers and discussing some major roles including ones in Mission: Impossible IV and Sherlock Holmes 2.
Renner and Rapace might seem too old to play Hansel and Gretel but only according to the misconception that this version will be a straight adaptation of the fairytale. In fact, this adaptation will follow the duo 15 years after the gingerbread house, when they are now trained bounty hunters who go after witches, hence the subtitle "Witch Hunter."
That's a cool and unique premise and I'm very intrigued to see how it comes to fruition on the big-screen. It may be taking one of the most beloved children's tales of all time and contorting it into some sort of adventure film that apparently mixes action and dark humor, but at least it's something different for movie goers. The film will already attract people because of the title recognition but at the same time give them something new to be intrigued by.
For the time being, take this news as a solid "maybe" as opposed to something official since the word has only come from one of the possible actors (Renner) in a single interview. However, after translating the original interview with Renner from Norwegian, we found out the actor said that although a deal isn't in place yet, he's doing everything he can to make it happen.
But until we here official confirmation of Renner and Rapace's involvement, nothing is certain yet. Still, I like the sound of the premise, and I really like these two actors, so color me interested.
Renner speculates that Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters MIGHT start shooting in Fall of 2011.
