The Mayor of Reno, Nevada has cleared up the real reason for Jeremy Renner's accident. Renner, who is known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently starred in his own Disney+ series and will be reprising his role as Mike McLusky in the upcoming Mayor of Kingstown season 2, which will premiere on January 15. The acclaimed actor, who has been nominated for two Academy Awards and received a Screen Actor's Guild Award, was involved in a serious snowplowing accident that left him in critical condition on January 1.

After trying to clear heavy snowfall on New Year's weekend, the actor's snowplow ran over his leg, and Renner is still in stable, but critical condition. In the aftermath, the Mayor of Reno, Hillary Schieve, spoke with the Reno Gazette Journal to clarify some of the details about what happened to Renner, and how he was doing his best to be a good citizen before getting hurt. Check out the mayor's quote below:

“He was helping someone stranded in the snow. He is always helping others.”

Everything Revealed About Jeremy Renner's Accident So Far

Since the accident, Renner's family has offered an optimistic update. The family thanks first responders and the medical teams who came to Renner's aid, then describes the injuries that Renner suffered as "blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries" after his Snowcat plow ran over his leg, causing severe blood loss. After a neighbor helped to tourniquet his leg, Renner was then airlifted to the hospital. A day after the accident was announced, Renner went through two surgeries and has since remained in intensive care while he continues to recover. While there have not been any updates about the prognosis or his general state at the moment, the fact that Renner is stable is a good sign after the initial reports.

The incident is only made more upsetting by the revelation that he was trying to help a stranded motorist that was surrounded by three feet of snow, which caused the city to close off mountain passes. It is not too much of a surprise that Renner went out of his way to help people, given his track record. For example, last year it was revealed that Renner learned ASL to welcome his fellow Hawkeye star Alaqua Cox. Nevertheless, it does add another layer of tragedy to the accident. While the Reno sheriff's office has not commented on the stranded motorist at the time of this writing, the Mayor has made Renner's behavior clear.

There are reports that the incident should never have happened, as Renner's snowplow allegedly should have had safety mechanisms in place to prevent the serious injuries that Renner is currently suffering from. Renner often takes to social media to describe the snowfall by his home and typically describes the snow as a positive part of living in Nevada, which only makes the accident more tragic. James Gunn and other Marvel creatives are wishing Renner a speedy recovery, but the actor has a long way to go before he can get back to feeling something close to his normal.
