Jennifer Morrison (How I Met Your Mother) reveals new depths in her abilities as an actress in director Gavin O’Connor’s drama Warrior. Morrison, who plays a pivotal supporting role in the film, has said that this is the project that she has been most honored and proud to be a part of to date – and the vast majority of critics agree that Warrior is well worth watching.
The story of a fractured family that (quite literally) must fight their way to reconciliation, Warrior is a universally relatable film that explores what it means to truly commit to something, the consequences of our choices, and the trials one must face in the search for genuine forgiveness. A large part of the success of the film is due to the texture given to all of the characters and relationships.
Morrison plays Tess, the wife of Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton), a physics teacher who is driven by financial duress to turn back to the mixed martial arts fighting that he did in his youth. Brendan’s choice, which was made to protect his family, is one that will strain his relationship with his wife and created family, and set him on a collision course towards a reckoning with the split and dysfunctional family of his birth.
Tess could be little more than a plot device in a lesser film, with a lesser performer, but O’Connor and his actors manage to craft a relationship between Brendan and Tess that we believe is worth the fearsome test of will that Brendan Conlon is given in Warrior.
Take a look at the synopsis for the film and our interview with Morrison below.
Two brothers face the fight of a lifetime – and the wreckage of their broken family – within the brutal, high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting in Lionsgate’s action/drama, WARRIOR. An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father (Nick Nolte), a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father. But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.
