Jennifer Lawrence Talks Mystique in 'X-Men: First Class'

Jennifer Lawrence Cast as Mystique in X-Men: First Class

Jennifer Lawrence has received high praise and Oscar buzz for her turn in the Sundance Film Festival favorite Winter's Bone, but the character-driven drama isn't the only high profile project the 20-year-old actress is involved with. This summer, we reported that Lawrence had joined the cast of X: Men: First Class as the mutant Mystique.

Since that time, Lawrence has been busy in London working on the film alongside her co-stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and January Jones, among others. Thus far, we haven't seen Lawrence in her full Mystique make-up, but there have been some lovely pictures of the actress in her regular costume on set.

In a recent interview with Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere, Lawrence explained why we haven't seen any photos of her as a blue-skinned Mystique yet and how long it takes to complete her makeup for the role.

Lawrence told Wells that "only 10% of her screen time will be as Mystique," but that it's no small effort to make the transition into the shape-shifting beauty's natural look. Applying all of the blue make-up and scales takes the X-Men: First Class makeup artists close to six hours. Lawrence's nickname for the process is "Mystink."

Clearly, with all of that effort, Fox doesn't want any unapproved photos making their way to the web. I suppose they know comic book movie fans can be somewhat critical, if they see something they don't like (even if it is seen outside of the context of the film). As such, Lawrence said official photos of her character would come out closer to the release of the film, which is June 3, 2011.

In the previous X-Men films, Rebecca Romijn played Mystique. While I greatly enjoyed her in the role, I always thought that the movies didn't do justice to the character's importance in the comics. Mystique is hugely important in the Marvel universe - involved in many complex relationships with other key characters including Magneto, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Sabretooth and Professor Xavier.

I know that X-Men: First Class can't answer all of the questions, but it would be nice if the movie touched on Mystique's considerable backstory a bit more than the previous films. That would be the purpose of a prequel, of course, but with so many characters, it's no guarantee.
