We here at Screen Rant have really started something with these speculation pieces about our favorite comic book movies… After imaging such things as what the plot of Batman 3 will be, or the potential villain of Wolverine 2, we’ve recently turned our attention toward the string of films be developed by the newly-formed DC Entertainment Inc., wondering which actors can play which DC characters.
MTV Splash Page‘s Josh Wigler put together a recent list of actors who chould play Lobo in the Guy Ritchie-directed film about the DC Universe’s interstellar anti-hero bounty hunter. That list was ok, but neglected two outstanding choices that we here at Screen Rant just had to feature in our own Lobo casting post.
Well, one of those actors we suggested must’ve gotten word that his name was being floated around the blogosphere, because less then ten days after we nominated him, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has officially announced his candidacy to play Lobo.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan spoke to Superhero Hype (should’ve spoken to us, JDM!) about the upcoming Lobo movie and let his interest in the role be known:
“[They’re] making ‘Lobo’ right now…That would be cool. ‘Lobo’ would be very cool. I don’t think that I’m as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke’s body on my head, that would be just great.”
Since Superhero Hype snagged the info fair and square, you’ll have to head over there for Morgan’s full quotes on the subject.
In the meantime, in case you didn’t read my initial post tossing JDM’s hat in the ring, here’s why I (and our team of Screen Rant regulars – best focus group in the business) thought that Morgan was a pretty solid lock for the role:
Morgan has shown that he can play a gruff, burly, merciless, psychotic anti-hero with his turn as The Comedian in DC/WB’s adaptation of Watchmen early this year. And, with the actor already signed on as the lead in another DC/WB comic book film (The Losers), he’s earning himself a lot of clout both with the studio and comic book fans everywhere as a go-to guy for these kinds of roles. Maybe it’s time for him to step up and take center stage with Lobo?
Now that I’ve vented, go back and trace the path of these events for yourself. Be sure to look at our Lobo casting post again, to see how Jeffrey Dean Morgan stacks up against our other top Lobo pick, Mexican actor Danny Trejo. Who knows, maybe Trejo will be out there campaigning for the role tomorrow…
Lobo is currently in development and doesn’t have a release date yet.
