Filmmaker Kevin Smith says the first Jay and Silent Bob Reboot red band trailer will debut at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The Jay and Silent Bob duo, played respectively by Jason Mewes and Smith himself, first appeared in Smith’s 1994 breakout feature Clerks. The stoner pair would go on to appear in Smith’s films Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma before receiving their own showcase film in 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

A parody of the movie industry’s clueless approach to comic book films, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back saw the titular duo traveling to Hollywood to stop production of a movie based on their comic book alter egos Bluntman and Chronic. Now almost 20 years after striking back in their first starring feature, Jay and Silent Bob are set to return for a follow up that takes on Hollywood’s obsession with rebooting everything. Smith has assembled a strong cast for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, including Avengers star Chris Hemsworth, Rosario Dawson, Justin Long and Grant Gustin of TV’s The Flash, as well as long-time collaborators like Jason Lee and (maybe) Ben Affleck.

In a posting on his Facebook page, Kevin Smith revealed that fans will get their first look at Jay and Silent Bob Reboot when he brings the red band trailer to this year's San Diego Comic-Con, which runs from July 18-21. In his posting, Smith shouted out trailer house AV Squad for putting together the 2 minute and 30 second preview for what he calls his "new favorite movie." Smith promises the trailer captures "the fun and feels" of the movie without giving it all away. Smith also revealed the full movie's runtime is 1 hour and 45 minutes. In addition to the debut of the first red band Jay and Silent Bob Reboot trailer, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con will be loaded with the usual array of fan friendly panels and events. Just today, it was confirmed that Netflix’s new Henry Cavill-led fantasy series The Witcher will arrive at this year’s convention. For the first time ever, Godzilla will stomp into SDCC as well. The highly anticipated horror sequel IT Chapter Two will also debut new footage at the event. Reportedly, the Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick will also have a presence at Comic-Con. Though there will definitely be a lot of fun things going on at the convention, major studios Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. are all breaking with form and skipping the convention’s main stage Hall H for this year.

Given his massive love for pop culture and especially comic book culture, Smith is a natural to have a presence at Comic-Con. Fans of Smith and his Jay and Silent Bob characters will no doubt be thrilled to see the filmmaker break out the first trailer for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot at the convention. Those who enjoyed Smith’s movies way back in the day, but think the filmmaker has gone astray in recent years as he’s focused on making weird horror movies and becoming a prolific podcaster, may greet the first Jay and Silent Bob Reboot footage with a little more of a wait-and-see attitude.
