Kevin Smith is "rebooting" Jay and Silent Bob - and the filmmaker has chosen The Flash headliners Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh, and Carlos Valdes to join the cast. The film, a sequel to 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, isn't actually a reboot; instead, it's set to parody Hollywood's habit of rebooting popular movie properties - with a story that sees Jay and Silent Bob head to Tinsel Town to stop a reboot of Bluntman and Chronic. Longtime fans will see the humor in that premise - as the first film in the series saw Jay and Silent Bob travel to Hollywood to stop Bluntman and Chronic from being adapted into a movie.

Previously, Smith had suggested that the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot would begin filming this fall - with a script that star Jason Mewes described as "amazing." Now, thanks to the Comic-Con 2018, we know one reason the film is targeting a fall start date: The Flash.

Speaking at the annual Evening with Kevin Smith panel that, traditionally, closes down Saturday programming in Hall H, the fan-favorite director confirmed he'll start filming Jay and Silent Bob Reboot in November - and that Flash collaborators Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh, and Carlos Valdes would be joining the production.

Speculation immediately moved to fan-casting Grant as the rebooted Chronic and Valdes as the rebooted Bluntman with Cavanagh portraying the reboot's director; however, Smith did not specify which characters the CW alums would be portraying - much less whether they'd be portraying the eponymous heroes (nor how big a role the Flash stars will actually play).

An even more outrageous (and as a result fitting) variation of this theory suggests Gusting and Valdes will portray themselves - as the actors cast in the movie. As a result, hope that Gustin and Valdes will be cast as Jay and Silent Bob's cartoonish alter egos - as the actors (much less the actors playing themselves) set to star in the Bluntman and Chronic reboot - is at this point premature.

That said, there's no doubt it would be fun to see The Flash actors get to riff on Smith and Mewes - especially after the Jay and Silent Bob actors guest-starred on Flash. While we can't know for sure, the timing is certainly encouraging, since a November 2018 shoot for the production would position filming alongside work on The Flash season 5 - which continues shooting in Vancouver this fall (with Smith, potentially, at the helm of at least one Arrowverse episode).

The Vancouver studio, November production, and familiarity between Smith and the CW actors, combine into an ideal filming opportunity, one that would allow Smith to fit his project into Gustin, Cavanagh, and Valdes' busy schedules, on their home turf: a production studio (which could come in very handy for a film that is supposed to take place in Hollywood and, to that end, will include scenes on studio backlots).

Flash with Jay and Silent Bob

Still, Gustin, Cavanaugh, and Valdes could only have minor roles - rather than the loftier idea that the three will be co-starring opposite the titular stoners. We'll have to wait for more details from Smith but, whether the Flash team gets significant screentime or smaller roles, it's still fun to see the filmmaker finding new ways to collaborate with actors as entertaining and well-liked as Gustin, Cavanaugh, and Valdes.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is shaping up to be a clever, and presumably very meta, installment in a film series that's well-known for inside jokes and self-deprecating humor. We'll look forward to further details when Smith is prepared to share - and hope that other fan-favorite Arrowverse actors might also make an appearance.
