Jay & Silent Bob Reboot Will Feature Clerks' Brian O'Halloran

Brian O'Halloran confirms he will appear in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. When Kevin Smith's indie comedy Clerks was released in theaters, it launched the writer-director's career as well as the careers of Jason Mewes, Jeff Anderson, and O'Halloran. But not many people knew that the movie originally had a very tragic ending. Initially the film's protagonist - Dante Hicks (O'Halloran) - was supposed to be shot and murdered when the store he worked in was robbed during the final moments of the film. Smith cut the ending, allowing the movie to end on a much lighter note - Dante's really bad day had finally ended with him closing the store for the night. Not only was this ending more in tune with the movie's comedic themes, but it also allowed Dante to make a few more appearances.

O'Halloran appeared in all of Smith's earliest movies, either as Dante or some other character. Dante himself appeared again in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the sequel Clerks II. He was expected to be seen again in Clerks 3 but the movie fell through. Still, Smith has been looking to return to his New Jersey movies and characters, and it seems like he has found a way with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

And according to an interview he gave Comicbook during Wizard World Chicago, O'Halloran has signed on to return in the upcoming film. And not just as Dante, but possibly as one or more of his other characters who share the last name Hicks.

In fact, O'Halloran made it sound like he's going to play many of his characters from Smith's various films:

“We’re going to have a couple of very funny bits with the Kevin Smith characters that I’ve portrayed. I’ve portrayed a number of them at this point, so I think we’re going to bring a variety of them back.”

Aside from Dante, O'Halloran was seen in Mallrats as dating show contestant Gill Hicks, executive Jim Hicks in Chasing Amy, and reporter Grant Hicks in DogmaSince those roles were little more than cameos, it will be interesting to see how Smith fits them all into the new story.

Meanwhile, constantly down on his luck Dante had a change of luck at the end of Clerks II. He went from working for minimum wage in a fast food restaurant and preparing to marry the wrong girl for the wrong reasons to owning his own convenience store and getting engaged to his true love Becky - who was also pregnant with his child. Since things rarely work out for Dante, odds are that when he is seen again in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot things may not be going so well for him again. Still, it will be nice to catch up with the character more than 10 years after he was last seen, as well as with O'Halloran's various other Hickses.
