Jay Leno took to Twitter to crack a joke about Jeremy Renner’s recent snowplow accident. In November 2022, Leno himself fell victim to a serious accident, being burned by a gasoline fire in his Los Angeles Garage. The accident saw him being taken to the Grossman Burn Center and him canceling all arrangements that week.

It seems like Jay Leno is well and over his accident, as he took to Twitter to make a joke about Jeremy Renner’s own life-threatening situation. While the move may have been an attempt to shed some light on their recent tragedies, the reception of his joke sees Twitter users slamming the comedian for his apparent insincerity. Jeremy Renner's Recovery Timeline Explained

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in MCU

Renner’s accident happened on January 1, New Year’s Day, and details were, at first, sparse. It was first reported that Renner was involved in a “weather related incident,” after the Nevada area the accident happened in suffered heavy snowfall that then required action from Renner. It was then reported that, according to eyewitness interviews, Renner was plowing near his Tahoe home when the accident occurred: the Snowcat he was operating rolled over and significantly damaged his leg, causing life-threatening blood loss. A neighbor, who is also, thankfully, a doctor, treated Renner’s wounds before paramedics arrived.

January 2nd saw an optimistic update and clarity from Renner’s family. They said Renner suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and underwent surgery. Then, Renner was in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition. In their statement, Renner’s family expressed their gratitude for the doctors and nurses looking after him. Shortly after his accident, Renner received support and best wishes from MCU creatives, including James Gunn, Tara Strong, and Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz.

On the third of January, it was revealed by the mayor of Reno that the accident happened when Renner was helping someone who was stranded in the snow: this will later be identified as his nephew. This day also saw an update from Renner himself. On Instagram, even though he was “too messed up to type,” the actor shared a photo of himself on a hospital bed and the caption thanked everyone for all their kind words. This post garnered love and support from not just fans but also MCU costars, including Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Taika Waititi, Chris Pratt, Colbie Smulders, and Paul Bettany; MCU filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo also sent their support.

Following updates included another post from Renner on his 52nd birthday — a video of him enjoying a spa day with his family — and a message thanking the hospital staff who took care of him. His birthday saw more support from friends, namely an endearing post from the Russo Brothers. Finally, in a tweet on January 16, Renner confirmed that he had returned home from the hospital; he also said he watched the premiere of Mayor of Kingstown’s second season. Leno’s joke comes barely a month after Renner’s accident. While it’s possible that Leno meant well — and even though Chris Evans and Renner himself have joked about the incident — Leno’s joke seems out of place and insensitive.
