Jason Statham Offers 'Layer Cake 2' Update

Jason Statham in 'Furious 7'

With Transporter, Crank and Expendables sequels under his belt, Jason Statham is certainly no stranger to ongoing action franchises. Most recently seen wreaking havoc in this year's Fast & Furious 7, Statham is gearing up for another sequel, but it might not be one fans would expect.

Back in 2013, it was reported that Statham had acquired the film rights to J.J. Connelly's novel Viva La Madness - the sequel to his 2000 release Layer Cake - and intended to take on the lead role. The first book was, of course, adapted to film as Matthew Vaughn's 2004 directorial debut and starred a pre-Bond Daniel Craig as the unnamed protagonist.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Statham about his upcoming action comedy Spy, and the actor provided an update on the development of the Layer Cake sequel. Here's what he had to say:

"J.J. Connelly's written a great book called Viva La Madness, and we're taking that book and doing something great with it. He's such a talented writer... the book was incredible. I loved Layer Cake and this is [if anything] better... The chance to work with someone of that caliber, do something back home. It's the most exciting thing on my plate... We're doing it next year, and it's full steam ahead. We're putting all the finance together, and we're off and racing."

Fans of Connelly's books, as well as Vaughn's film, should be pleased to hear that Statham has such passion for the material, and with his big-screen experience in crime thrillers like Layer Cake there's little doubt that the actor can easily slip into the material. The real question surrounds who might take the director's chair this time around, as there's no reason to think Vaughn will return to helm the project.

As for Statham, his schedule is usually pretty busy (that's what happens when you're juggling several franchises simultaneously - just ask Dwayne Johnson), but it sounds like fans of Connelly's hard-boiled world can count on further news about the film sooner rather than later. Since it sounds ready to shoot next year a 2017 release is most likely, although this is purely speculation during this early stage.
