The Fast Saga adds more A-list talent in Fast & Furious 10 with Jason Momoa's mysterious character. The Aquaman actor will play a villain in the franchise, and Momoa teased some details about the forthcoming role. In a recent interview at The Batman premiere, Jason Momoa said his F10 character would be "a very flamboyant bad boy" in the franchise. The actor added that his villain will have "a little panache!"
The Fast Saga in its current form is soon coming to an end. Fast & Furious 10 and Fast and Furious 11 will end the main franchise, which started with The Fast and the Furious in 2001. The franchise will conclude with director Justin Lin helming the last two installments, potentially bringing Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) story to a close. Despite the main storyline ending, the Fast & Furious films have already introduced a successful spinoff with 2019's Hobbs & Shaw, and more spinoffs are likely.
Fast & Furious 10 will have an electric character with Jason Momoa's Fast & Furious villain, but the franchise should avoid one common trick. The Fast Saga continually brings in A-list actors to play villains in the franchise, but it eventually changes them into heroes. From Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw to John Cena's Jakob Toretto, the villains continually become members of Dominic Toretto's family. In the case of Jakob Toretto, he's even a blood relative. For the franchise to move forward, it needs to stop making everyone part of one big family. So Jason Momoa's villain needs to stay a villain.
The Fast & Furious villain trick takes the stakes out of the franchise. When every villain constantly joins Team Family, it makes the conflicts in the movies less meaningful. For instance, Deckard Shaw seemingly killed Han (Sung Kang) in the films, only for Han to later return for Shaw to seem like he wasn't so bad after all. Likewise, if Jason Momoa becomes a part of Dom's squad in the future, it shows he was never much of a villain anyway. The Fast & Furious trope of villains becoming heroes makes sense to keep fan-favorite characters returning to the screen. However, it's happened enough that it's not a surprise anymore.
There is still a possibility that Momoa's villain stays a villain. With the main story in the franchise coming to an end in the next two installments, Momoa's villain may simply run out of time to make the change to a hero. Instead, he could continually team up with Charlize Theron's Cipher, who's taken a villainous role in both The Fate of the Furious and F9. However, Dwayne Johnson previously tried to get Momoa to join the franchise as a good guy in Hobbs & Shaw, so there were already plans to have him fill a much different role in the films. In the end, Momoa's "bad boy" may not stay bad in Fast & Furious 10, but he definitely should.
