Jason Momoa Shaves Off Trademark Beard to Raise Environmental Awareness

Aquaman Jason Momoa Movie Poster Cropped

Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has taken a shocking plunge, shaving off his famous beard in a bid to raise awareness around environmental issues. The 39-year-old actor, famous for his rugged good looks, has completely removed the beard that has become synonymous with roles such as Khal Drogo and Aquaman and has shocked fans with his new look.

Fans of Momoa and his work are used to seeing him sporting long rugged locks, heavy brows (complete with scar that he received courtesy of a bar brawl and 140 stitches) and of course his trademark beard, but it seems that Momoa is now altering his image and all for a good cause. The Hawaiian born actor has spoken previously of his passion for water conservation and what better advocate for such an issue than Aquaman, himself.

On his Instagram, Momoa shared a video of himself to his 11 million followers, removing his beard and talking of the reasons why. In his post titled, Infinitely Recyclable, the Game of Thrones actor can be seen outdoors, traipsing through plastic waste and taking an electric razor to his beard. He has received mixed reactions online, with many fans supporting his actions while others reportedly heartbroken with his new image. In his video he speaks to the camera, while he shears away, talking of plastic pollution as something that he doesn’t merely want to complain about, but something that he can help influence, citing aluminum as one way to tackle the issue.

The video has had over 2.5 million views and has garnered support from his Game of Thrones co-stars, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey. It's also been posted as promo for a new line of recyclable canned water, though it’s yet to be confirmed what the actor’s role is with the new product from The Ball Corporation. But with 19 billion pounds of plastic waste a year entering the oceans around the world and with Momoa’s distaste for plastic water bottles, as stated in the video, it is unsurprising that the actor has joined in efforts to help alleviate this.

This comes at a time when many celebrities join in with the call to be kinder and more responsible to the environment, and when shows such as Netflix’s Our Planet, voiced by veteran broadcaster and conservationist David Attenborough, bring both the wonder of and responsibility to the planet, to audiences around the world, with breathtaking cinematography and natural history storytelling at its best.

And so, while this may be seen as timely given the environmental issues surrounding plastic use, and the epic finale season of Game of Thrones, the show that shot him – and his beard – into the limelight, it’s yet to be seen if the role of environment warrior will now be bestowed upon Momoa. Whatever happens, with the actor now set to take up a new role in Denis Villeneuve’s reboot of Dune in 2020, it is definitely the end of an era for Jason Momoa, with some epic roles behind him and with exciting new ones to come.
