With several huge projects in the pipeline, Jared Leto fans are looking forward to seeing him in 2023's Tron: Ares. Known for his eccentricity, Jared Leto has appeared in over two dozen films throughout his career in the entertainment industry. Of these, many find Leto playing isolated characters that are on the fringe of society, often those shunned for their identity.

That said, some of Leto's parts are stranger than others. Looking at his most memorable performances, the level of peculiarity varies with each of his characters. Here are Leto's most infamous roles, ranked from the most conventional to the most offbeat.

Paul Allen: American Psycho (2000)

American Psycho tells the story of Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), an investment banker in New York City hiding a psychopathic ego underneath his surface. When he is instigated by a colleague at work, Bateman seemingly gives in to these tendencies, sending him down a reckless path of paranoid hedonism.

Leto's character in American Psycho is another banker at Bateman's firm, Paul Allen. Compared to the rest of Leto's filmography, Allen is a regular guy. His only crime is being so ambitious that he falls into the crosshairs of Bateman.

Rayon: Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Led by Matthew McConaughey in one of his best rolesDallas Buyers Club follows Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), a rodeo cowboy diagnosed with AIDS who creates an underground drug ring to provide alternative treatments for the virus.

In an Oscar-winning turn, Leto plays Rayon, a trans woman also diagnosed with AIDS who begrudgingly teams up with the initially hostile Woodroof to run the organization. Of Leto's characters, Rayon is the one most rooted in reality, influenced by extensive research, as opposed to just Leto's brand of method acting.

Angel Face: Fight Club (1999)

Guided by an unnamed Narrator (Edward Norton), the plot of Fight Club focuses on a discontent white-collar worker who forms a "fight club" alongside his friend Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) to air out his frustrations.

Although a small part, Leto is memorable in his performance as Angel Face, a member of the club the Narrator beats after Tyler shows favoritism towards him. Similar to American Psycho, while Leto's character might seem weird, alongside the other characters his behavior is hardly jarring.

Vitaly Orlov: Lord Of War (2005)

Inspired by stories of real-life arms dealers, Lord Of War tracks Yuri Orlov, played by Nicolas Cage in one of his best performances, a Ukrainian refugee who decides to start smuggling weapons after witnessing a Russian mob hit.

Leto plays Vitaly Orlov, Yuri's younger brother whom Yuri convinces to enter the business with him. Though the circumstances are outlandish, both Cage and Leto turn in compelling naturalistic performances that ground an at times scattered film.

Nemo: Mr. Nobody (2009)

Set in a world where humans have achieved immortality, Mr. Nobody details the life of the last mortal human on Earth. Now 118 years old, Nemo Nobody reflects on his memories and hardships with the help of a doctor and journalist fascinated with life before immortality.

Leto plays the older versions of the titular role, at 34 and 118 years old, and captures all the disparate timelines throughout the course of the film. While the film is unconventional in its structure and plot devices, Leto holds it together throughout with an emotionally centered performance.

Harry Goldfarb: Requiem For A Dream (2000)

Jared Leto - Requiem for a Dream

Taking place in the Brighton Beach burrow of New York City, Requiem For A Dream depicts four characters affected by drugs in different ways. As the film progresses, their addictions lead their physical and emotional states to deteriorate.

In this psychological drama, Leto plays Harry Goldfarb, the character tying together all of the addicts' lives. This performance marked Leto's first major foray into method acting, resulting in a character that equally captures the audience's sympathies and repulsions.

Dr. Michael Morbius: Morbius (2022)

While the film as a whole is strange, it would almost feel stranger if an actor like Leto wasn't playing the main character. Despite Leto's signature preparative style, Dr. Michael Morbius, a peculiar performance in its own right, is bland in comparison to some of Leto's more outlandishly written characters.

Niander Wallace: Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Jared Leto Blade Runner

Considered one of the best legacy sequels ever madeBlade Runner 2049 picks up 30 years after the original film and highlights a new character, K (Ryan Gosling), a replicant "blade runner" who discovers potential evidence of replicants being able to reproduce.

In a supporting but important role, Leto plays Niander Wallace, CEO of the corporation responsible for creating replicants. While Leto fashioned his character with quirks from the tech world, the choice to stay blind during filming adds to the unnerving nature of the character.

Paolo Gucci: House Of Gucci (2021)

Based on real-life events, House Of Gucci dramatizes the story of the Gucci family, and how the marriage of Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) led to a fight for control of the brand.

Wearing prosthetics that make him almost unrecognizable, Leto plays Paolo Gucci, Maurizio's cousin who aspires to be a designer despite his clear lack of talent. In addition to the prosthetics, Leto deployed a baffling Italian accent that, regardless of audience reception, made it hard to look away from him.

The Joker: Suicide Squad (2021)

Jared Leto's Joker in a straitjacket

Considered one of the worst DC movies ever made, Suicide Squad is instigated by an FBI agent who recruits supervillains to join a black ops team in exchange for reduced sentences. When things begin to go awry, the criminals' ability to work together is put up to the test.

Jared Leto's performance as the Joker was maligned by critics. With his preparation methods highly publicized for the film, they were also the most condemned out of any of his movies. However, Leto's bizarre performance stands out as the most memorable in a film many want to forget existed, a testament to his presence as a performer.
