Jared Leto Teases Next Step of 'Suicide Squad' Joker Transformation

The DC Movie Universe has been savvy in terms of early marketing strategy; the filmmakers and (a handful of) the stars have all provided steady social media looks into the DCMU process. The upcoming villain teamup film Suicide Squad has been especially transparent in this manner, teasing production details and one big ace up the sleeve: Jared Leto's Joker.

Details about this new Joker (who will only be a side character in Suicide Squad before gaining prominence later) have pointed to a version most directly linked with Frank Miller's vision of the villain from The Dark Knight Returns - and today only further pushes that notion.

Here's Jared Leto's latest update on his "Joker Transformation":

Transformation begins.

Awhile back, we saw Leto cut his long locks down to shorter bleach blonde hairdo, presumably in preparation for his green dye job. From the looks of things in the photo above (and the implications of the caption), Leto is supposedly about to go through a more significant (if not total) transformation into the character - one which could range from wig/dye to the makeup needed to create the white complexion of the Joker's skin.

Whatever the details of the process, we still expect the end result to be something along the lines of Dark Knight Returns Joker, who was markedly different from previous iterations. The Returns Joker was older, broader in physique, but more effeminate in mannerism (which he used to chilling effect). His face was bony, with hollow sunken eyes and bare makeup (when he finally put on lipstick, the results were pretty horrible); in other words, much the same way Leto looks in the latest image, before makeup would make the transformation complete.

As we've previously stated, going with this version of the Joker (with room left over for actor invention, of course) would be prudent for several reasons:

  1. It honors some beloved source material (TDKRns).
  2. It separates Leto's Joker from both Nicholson's and Ledger's. (Arguably it's a merging of the two.)
  3. It's still very much in step with the character, and (as seen in the graphic novel) can be one of the most frightening versions yet.

While inevitably there will be those who remain skeptical, we feel safe in saying that Jared Leto's Joker is one of the more positive DC Movie casting choices when it comes to fan reception. Suicide Squad, in general, has been looked at with anticipation and excitement for bringing something different to the genre - so all in all, the film is in a good place.

...Now how soon will it be until we get the full Jared Leto Joker reveal?
