There are few roles in the history of superhero movies more iconic than Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, which makes it all the more tragic that Ledger passed away several months before the film was released. Since then, there's been a kind of unofficial moratorium on cinematic portrayals of the Joker, but that will end next year when Jared Leto sports the character's green locks and red lips in supervillain team-up movie, Suicide Squad.
Over the last few months Leto has been teasing his gradual transformation from long-haired bearded rocker into Batman's greatest nemesis. Leto's facial hair (including his eyebrows) is gone, and he's been sporting cropped and bleached hair. Suicide Squad director David Ayer recently offered the first look at Leto with green hair, recreating the cover of famous graphic novel The Killing Joke, and now the next stage of the transformation has been revealed.
This latest photo was posted by Leto on Snapchat and preserved by Bad Taste. It shows the actor sporting vibrantly green hair and messily-applied red lipstick, though he doesn't appear to be wearing any other kind of make-up. Suicide Squad began filming this week, which means there's a very good chance that this photo was posted while Leto was on set, but that doesn't necessarily mean that this is the final look for the character. Perhaps Leto was just messing around in the make-up trailer.
Of course, the Joker's make-up is only one part of what will really bring the character to life. One thing that's noteworthy about all the teaser photos that Leto and Ayer have posted so far is that Leto isn't really smiling in any of them, and one of the Joker's trademarks is his great big evil grin. It could be the case that Suicide Squad's Joker is a bit more serious (antithetical as that may sound), or perhaps the Joker smile will be the final part of the transformation.
Of course, the Joker isn't the only bad guy in Suicide Squad. The ensemble cast also includes Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jim Pallack as Deathstroke, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Will Smith as Deadshot and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, with other several DC villains rumored to appear.
These reprehensible criminals will be forced to cooperate as they embark on black ops missions in exchange for commuted sentences, but just because they're working together it doesn't mean they have to play nicely.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman - June 23rd, 2017; Justice League - November 17th, 2017; The Flash - March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman - July 27th, 2018; Shazam - April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 - June 14th, 2019; Cyborg - April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern - June 19th, 2020.
