Jared Leto is something of an anomaly in Hollywood. Probably around 50% of his audience know him from his huge acting career that has seen him inject just the right amount of crazy into a number of impressive roles, while the other half know him as the powerful frontman of 30 Seconds To Mars. He has left the band (mostly) behind him in recent years, and has turned his name into one of the most prominent in Hollywood.

Despite his fame, he has had his fair share of duds. We’ve compared the five films IMDb considers to be Leto’s best, with the five it deems the worst.

BEST: Mr. Nobody (7.8)

Jared Leto - Mr. Nobody

Mr. Nobody puts Jared Leto in the driving seat. As has become a trademark of Leto’s acting style, his character, Nemo Nobody is slightly crazy. We explore a variety of options for his life stemming from three major points in his past.

It’s the sort of film that could go either way, and luckily this one went the right way. It was nominated for a variety of non-mainstream awards and took home Best Film and Best Director at the Magritte Awards.

WORST: Basil (6.0)

Jared Leto Basil movie

Just before his biggest breakout role, Jared Leto landed one of the starring roles in 1998’s Basil.

Historical dramas tend to either fall down the path of genius excitement or total mundanity, and this one followed the latter path.

BEST: Dallas Buyers Club (8.0)

Jared Leto Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club is the powerful story of Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient who was fighting the disease in a time that saw it stigmatized and under-funded. Leto’s role was that of Rayon, a trans woman who also has HIV.

His role was treated with poise (though it should obviously have gone to an actual trans-woman), and his commitment to remaining in character meant that his co-stars never actually met Leto as himself.

WORST: Suicide Squad (6.0)

Joker laughs in the helicopter in Suicide Squad

There were a lot of issues with Jared Leto’s version of the Joker in Suicide Squad. The film itself has been highly criticized, and Leto’s role, coming between such revolutionary portrayals by Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger was always going to face scrutiny.

Suicide Squad is getting sequel reportedly without The Joker’s involvement, which seems like a strange move considering its almost universal failure.

BEST: Blade Runner 2049 (8.0)

Niander Wallace's eyes light up in Blade Runner 2049

For a sequel, especially a sequel to a classic film, Blade Runner 2049 was incredibly well-received. The original had been released back in 1982, and the decision to revisit it with many returning stars was a huge risk.

They pulled it off, with many considering it to be just as good (if not better) than its predecessor. Leto wasn’t given a huge part, but his work as Niander Wallace was praised.

WORST: Urban Legend (5.6)

Jared Leto - Urban Legend

It was released in the same year as Basil, but Urban Legend was somehow even more of a failure. Things really weren’t looking good for the career of the young actor.

The premise behind the film (a series of murders based on urban legends) sounds very interesting, but it just wasn’t done well. A reboot was announced in 2020, so hopefully, we’ll see something good come of it eventually.

BEST: Requiem For A Dream (8.3)

Jared Leto - Requiem for a Dream

Requiem For A Dream is arguably the hardest to watch, most depressing film ever made. Jared Leto really proved himself to be an emotionally intense, committed actor with his leading role in Darren Aronofsky’s classic.

He plays Harry Goldfarb, a heroin addict who ends up living one of the most truly heart-breaking and distressing lives every depicted on screen.

WORST: Alexander (5.6)

Jared Leto in Alexander

Another of Leto’s seemingly very miscast roles came from his appearance in 2004’s Alexander.

The film was Oliver Stone’s attempt at a grand, dramatic and incredibly star-studded (Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins were just some of the names involved) historical epic, but it failed to make an impact at the box office or amongst critics.

BEST: Fight Club (8.8)

Narrator fights Angel Face in Fight CLub

Fight Club is often considered one of the greatest films of all time. He might be outdone by Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden, but Leto’s character of Angel Face is certainly an interesting one. He doesn’t have one of the primary roles, but his presence in Project Mayhem is felt through his misleading, youthful demander.

David Fincher had release Seven just a few years earlier and established himself as one of the finest directors in Hollywood at the time, so the release of Fight Club (which was actually a box office disappointment and took a number of years to be recognized for what it was) was an incredible display of continued strength.

WORST: Black And White (4.9)

Black And White is almost impossible to Google, and almost as hard to enjoy. Its cast is exceptional, ranging from Ben Stiller, to Mike Tyson, to Robert Downey Jr., to the Wu-Tang Clan.

Yes, the Wu-Tang Clan. Despite attempting to be something huge and long-lasting, the reception to the film was generally negative.
