How Jane Foster’s Mjolnir powers are different to Thor’s in Thor: Love and Thunder. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen a few shake-ups following the events of Avengers: Endgame. And when Thor finally reunites with his ex-girlfriend Jane, she will not be the same woman he remembers from eight years prior. Thor: Love and Thunder reveals Jane has become Mighty Thor and wields Mjolnir.

The first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder offered the first proper glimpse of Jane’s Mighty Thor, but the second official trailer showed off more of her using Mjolnir in battle, as well as the new powers it granted her. Natalie Portman confirmed Mighty Thor’s unique powers in Thor: Love and Thunder would be different from those of Thor’s. Considering they are different people, it makes sense that Jane’s abilities would not exactly mirror her ex-boyfriend’s. Mighty Thor is able to generate and manipulate electricity, fly, and has superhuman strength, speed, and agility. Unsurprisingly, these are also the same powers Thor has. However, unlike the God of Thunder, who was born on Asgard, Jane was physically transformed after becoming Mighty Thor and picking up Mjolnir.

Much of the powers bestowed upon Jane in her new position as superhero come directly from Mjolnir. While she has superhuman strength thanks to being Mighty Thor, the beloved hammer gives her additional abilities that were not previously granted to the former King of New Asgard. Some of these powers will likely be present in Thor: Love and Thunder, but are not necessarily in the trailer. A crucial difference is Jane’s electrokinesis, which grants her the power to psychically generate and manipulate electrical energy. The trailer shows Mighty Thor calling on the lightning from the sky; in another scene, however, she flips through the air before sending shards of electricity to attack a group of soldiers she is fighting. In this instance, Jane doesn’t need to call upon the lightning to manipulate electricity at all as she seemingly does so with her body before using Mjolnir to concentrate the energy and change its form before sending it flying.

Yet another power that differs from Thor’s is Mighty Thor’s ability to create stars through Mjolnir. This is a power from the comics primarily, but one that could surface in Thor: Love and Thunder. In the comics, Jane can also control her use of Mjolnir like no one else before her, which gives her the ability to redirect where the hammer goes and how fast after she’s already thrown it. What’s more, Mighty Thor can spin Mjolnir around those she is fighting to imprison them. Her abilities prove that there is more to be unearthed about Mjolnir’s powers and how they may shift depending on who is wielding it.

This leaves Thor: Love and Thunder with a lot of potential regarding Jane’s turn as Mighty Thor as it won’t be a repeat of Thor’s journey or powers. It will also boost action sequences, offering surprises with what to expect of Jane's powers while wielding Mjolnir. Giving Jane different abilities is exciting in many ways and it’s likely the second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder barely scratches the surface of what her new abilities entail. And this far along in the MCU, Jane’s transformation into Mighty Thor will give Thor’s fourth solo outing a fresh take on a powerful hammer that has more to offer than previously assumed.
