Famed Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn received a limited edition Xbox Series X as a gift from Microsoft, along with a copy of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. While Gunn is more widely known for his work on both MCU Guardians Of The Galaxy films and this summer’s The Suicide Squad, he’s no stranger to video games. After all, he helped write the script to Suda51’s Lollipop Chainsaw and portrayed the Big Arms Chairman in 2013’s LoboCycle.

James Gunn has also weighed in on gaming over the years, as he described Star Wars: KOTOR as his favorite video game while expressing excitement for Asypr’s upcoming current-gen remake. He also tweeted a pleased reaction to Eidos Montreal’s Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy when it was first announced during Square Enix’s panel at E3 2021, with a particular interest being directed at the team’s pet space llama Kami. Now Xbox has decided to return that goodwill with a surprise console gift, just as they did with Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings star Simu Liu earlier this year.

Earlier today, James Gunn posted a picture of himself with a special edition Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Xbox Series X console, along with a deluxe copy of the game itself. According to Gunn’s Twitter post, this was given to him as a gift from Microsoft, and he thanked the company as he joked about playing Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy while he takes a break from shooting the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy took a fair bit of inspiration from James Gunn’s well-received Guardians Of The Galaxy movies, featuring a similar roster of Peter “Star-Lord” Quill, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot as they battle to overcome their personal demons and save the Marvel Universe from the cult-like Universal Church Of Truth. Eidos Montreal’s take on the spacefaring heroes received considerable praise when it launched in October, with critics complimenting Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy for its emotional plot, impressive visuals, and rocking 80s soundtrack, though the team-based gameplay was seen as formulaic.

The critical success of James Gunn’s MCU Guardians Of The Galaxy movies arguably helped to make Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy possible, so seeing the director with a copy of the game and a special editions Guardians Of The Galaxy Xbox Series X console to play it on is all the more heartwarming. Hopefully Gunn doesn’t get too distracted playing Eidos Montreal’s hit superhero title, as Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 is set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.
