James Gunn hints that a new Wonder Woman animated series is in the early works from the DC Universe. DC Studios is taking Warner Bros. Discovery's superhero properties in a brand new direction. While the DCEU still has several films coming out this year, a new DC Universe is being created. With Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs, they are working on crafting a new interconnected franchise. Their DC Universe will see more connectivity between films, TV shows, animation, and video games. That doesn't rule out Elseworlds-franchises, including The Batman and Joker universes. Safran and Gunn revealed in early January the first batch of Chapter 1 projects for "Gods and Monsters."With several DC movies and TV shows in the works, Gunn has made it clear that more Chapter 1 projects will be revealed. Whether that will be at San Diego Comic-Con this year or at other press events remains to be seen.

However, it appears Gunn may have teased another DC Universe property that is being worked on. A fan on Twitter shared how Diana Prince is a character with a rich cast, while using the #WonderWomanAnimatedSeries hashtag. Gunn responded that not only does he agree with that sentiment but that he is "working on it." This is the first time any Wonder Woman project with Diana specifically has been teased for the new DC Universe.

How DC Universe's Animated Shows Will Tie Into Live-Action

At the time of this story's publishing, Warner Bros. Discovery nor DC Studios haven't added any additional information about the potential project. If a Wonder Woman animated series is indeed in the works, it remains to be seen if it's going to HBO Max or a different service. This will mark the second animated project based in the DC Universe if this is indeed what Gunn was teasing. In January, Gunn announced that he had written several scripts for a Creature Commandos series.

Creature Commandos is one example of what they are doing with the DC Universe compared to the DCEU. According to DC Studios, whoever gets cast in a role in the animated properties will also reprise those characters in live-action. If the Wonder Woman show is meant to be set in the DC Universe, they may be eying an actress who would be pulling double duty. However, there is always the chance the project could be an Elseworlds-based property.

With Batman and Superman having had multiple animated shows over the years, Wonder Woman getting one is a welcomed decison. Given the rich world of Wonder Woman's mythology, there is so much Gunn could tap into for this potential series. Hopefully, more clarifications will emerge about the potential Wonder Woman animated series sooner rather than later.
