James Gunn's The Suicide Squad looks set to introduce multiple new characters, and Dave Bautista is reportedly in the running to play Peacemaker. Gunn of course became a household name to Marvel movie fans after writing and directing the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU. Gunn was planned to return and do the same for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but that was infamously derailed last summer after some old tweets resurfaced that made Disney feel he needed to be let go from the project.

While Disney may have felt they could no longer work with Gunn, Warner Bros. and DC had no problem eventually signing him up to write and direct a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, now titled simply The Suicide Squad. On track for a 2021 theatrical release, The Suicide Squad is kind of a sequel to David Ayer's film and kind of a soft reboot that introduces a bunch of new characters to the titular team of antiheroes.

Thanks to a Collider report from earlier today, it's now known what characters are likely to be among the new additions, including King Shark. One such new character reportedly likely to appear in The Suicide Squad is Peacemaker, a fairly obscure DC character so consumed with achieving peace that he'll paradoxically resort to any violent means in order to get it. While nothing is set in stone yet, Gunn apparently wants his old Guardians of the Galaxy star Bautista to play Peacemaker.

Peacemaker comics origin

It's no surprise that Gunn wants to bring Bautista into the DCEU fold, as the Drax the Destroyer actor has been fiercely loyal to his former director ever since the scandal surrounding Gunn's old tweets began. While Peacemaker is hardly a prominent character in the overall DC lore, neither was Drax a prominent Marvel character until Bautista played him on the big screen. With that in mind, Bautista would presumably trust Gunn implicitly to have offered him a worthy role should he ultimately sign on.

If Bautista does indeed agree to play Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad though, one wonders if that will seal Drax's fate in the MCU. Marvel Studios seems committed to eventually making Guardians of the Galaxy 3 with a new director, and Bautista has said that his MCU contract would require him to return for the sequel whether he wanted to or not. However, if Bautista's really that unhappy, and will also soon join the DCEU roster, perhaps Marvel Studios will decide to permanently kill Drax off and let their clearly disgruntled employee go off on his merry way.
