According to David Ayer, James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad movie will be in a different continuity than Ayer's version. Ayer directed 2016's Suicide Squad, which starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto. Warner Bros. first announced a sequel to Suicide Squad ahead of the first movie's release in 2016.

Production on The Suicide Squad began this past September in Georgia. While details about the movie are still scarce, there are reports that it will revolve around Amanda Waller enlisting the help of the team to deal with an extraterrestrial threat in Panama. Viola Davis will reprise her role as Waller. Returning Suicide Squad veterans include Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman. New cast members include Idris Elba, Taika Waititi, Nathan Fillion, and Peter Capaldi.

Earlier today on Twitter, Ayer clarified on the nature of the new movie and its relationship to the previous one. A Twitter user tweeted Ayer, taunting, "At least you're not directing the sequel." To this, Ayer responded, "It’s not a sequel it’s a reinvention and James Gunn is going to absolutely knock it out of the park. I’m cheering every step a way." In response to Ayer's tweet, another fan asked for clarification on whether The Suicide Squad would be a standalone and how it impacts continuity. Ayer replied to the second tweet, "Yes that is correct - some characters and elements will be used but James Gunn is reinventing the universe. Everybody recognizes the immense potential of the franchise." Check out Ayer's tweets about The Suicide Squad below:

This was part of a reaction to a series of tweets sent to Ayer by other Twitter users: seemingly fans who still haven't gotten over their anger about the first Suicide Squad. A Twitter user, seemingly out of nowhere, insulted Ayer while talking about his Suicide Squad being "trash." When Ayer asked the user to clarify, another user jumped in, claiming that Ayer is "living rent free" in people's heads after all these years. In response, Ayer stated that as an artist, if someone hates or loves his work, then he created a reaction and did his job.

In today's exchanges, Ayer decided to take the high road. It's good to see that he wasn't goaded into a drawn out squabble with disgruntled fans, though the insults have gotten to him in the past. Despite the box office successes, Suicide Squad was panned by critics. It seems like some fans still won't let this go. Perhaps this will change once the follow-up, non-sequel comes out. It is already said the new movie will be much more comedic than the gloomier 2016 movie. Regardless, Ayer seems to be supportive of the Gunn remake. Gunn and Ayer have discussed the upcoming The Suicide Squad and have been supportive of each other in the past. Hopefully, fans can learn to do the same.
