Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and will reveal a special secret. Gunn has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood over the last several years thanks to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's introduced the world to the Guardians and turned the obscure Marvel property into a massive franchise, one he plans to wrap up with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in a few years.

He isn't just spending time in the MCU though, as he's used his new, high profile to get a few other projects going. In 2016 he wrote and produced The Belko Experiment and has another horror film in the works too. He's also involved with Amazon's Starsky & Hutch TV reboot, and is likely developing even more projects. For a currently unknown reason, Gunn is set to make an appearance at SDCC next week for something special.

Gunn announced today on social media that he is going to be at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 next Friday, July 20th. The reason behind this sudden and surprise announcement though is unclear. Gunn isn't confirming why he's making the trip right now, only teasing something that is "dark, sweet, and special."

Gunn last attended SDCC in 2016 to share new information and clips from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He also went to the convention in 2013 to show off the first look at Guardians of the Galaxy just days after filming began. Marvel Studios is skipping SDCC altogether this year in an effort to let everyone take a quick break before Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 marketing begins. Thanks to their lack of a panel though, figuring out where Gunn fits on Friday is difficult.

The biggest connection Gunn has isn't even that strong, as Sony is holding their Spider-Man heavy panel on Friday night. The panel will include Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It is possible that Gunn - a major Marvel fan - could be involved in that panel in some capacity. Unfortunately, with Venom said to not be part of the MCU, there isn't a clear connection to be made. Unless he's going to the panel to make some surprise MCU announcements (or even confirm Venom is somehow connected to the universe), what surprise Gunn has in relation to Sony isn't clear.

As for the other major panels on Friday, Paramount and Universal both have panels. Paramount is developing a ROM: Spaceknight movie and Gunn is a massive fan of the character. Zack Penn is writing the script, but Gunn has previously only been interested in using the character in the MCU, not in a solo project that's part of the Hasbro shared universe. One fit could be the Universal panel as they're bringing Halloween and Glass to the convention. Gunn's filmography has a few notable horror projects to it, so maybe he's helping introduce the upcoming films. Universal's studio Blumhouse Tilt also helped distribute Gunn's Belko Experiment, so maybe Universal will announce another deal with Gunn to help bring his mystery horror movie to screens soon too. That may be the most realistic option, but we'll have to wait and see what secret he reveals next week.
